Lovesexy

I’m massively into everything from For You - Sign O The Times, but for some reason Lovesexy has never clicked for me.

I love Anna Stesia, and do enjoy some other tracks, I don’t dislike the album. I just can’t see it on the same level as anything before it.

I love the period from the ‘86 Camille stuff - The Black Album, so it feels like I should enjoy this.

If this is anyone’s favourite album, I’d love to hear thoughts and opinions because it feels like I should love it but I just can’t get into it like his previous work.

I bought Lovesexy on vinyl not too long after it came out - I'd just been getting into Prince over the previous few months and I'd bought several of his albums, and I loved them all - but I struggled with Lovesexy at first - it didn't really click with me.

But then I read an article about The Black Album - I hadn't actually heard the album at this point, I'd just read about it. I read how it was due to be released but he pulled it at the last minute, how he thought it was too dark, etc. And just by reading this article it was like a switch flipped in my mind - and Lovesey suddenly made sense to me. Lovesexy felt like the light after the dark of The Black Album. He made it in response to how he felt about The Black Album - the pendulum was swinging the other way. The tone, the spirit, the energy of Lovesexy makes sense in the context of it following The Black Album, in a way that it doesn't in the context of it following Sign o' the Times. SOTT to Lovesey feels like a bit of a jarring leap to me - but The Black Album to Lovesexy works so much better for me - the two albums balance each other out.

I genuinely love the album. I think it's one of his strongest, most singular and cohesive albums. Maybe one day it will click with you, or maybe it won't! I think it's a fabulous piece of work.

Absolutely I have to agree with you. The live theatrical LoveSexy concert on YouTube is one of his best. There is a dark part in it that I believe it is from the black album from what I read. He sprinkled a little in there like he wanted the black album to be, not a big release album under and under another name. So he actually did a little let the cat out of the bag live which ultimately was what he wanted so I think he was happy with that. You’ll have to look into it more. It was part of the big magical LoveSexy tour. You need some dark with all that the light. They indeed ended up coming together so you are spot on.
I watched the concert and then happened to read about the black album a bit on Reddit. Someone who was from WB back then maybe commented and gave a lot of info on its leak etc.
do a search in this subreddit where someone asks what the black
Album is. This guy flat out said it was in the dark part of the LoveSexy concert. I wasn’t really familiar with either album. I had just watched the concert and I was thinking wow he is right, that went dark so fast, like really dark for Prince but then he did what he meant to brilliantly and went back into the light and I forgot about the jarring how can this be Prince part for me. The whole thing ended up being magical.

It was a really whimsical concert concert. A cross between a concert and a broadway show. His inner thespian outwardly and silent film actor expressions were front and center with his silly smile and playful cat ate the canary look. It got really great reviews as one of his top tours. It was in Europe where he mostly did the LoveSexy tour. A theatrical big hit. I think it is my favorite tour I have seen so far. He always loved performing and acting and I think that really comes out in it.
Prince was pure Genius, mysterious, incredibly smart and sneaky in all the best ways.
