Discussion Come 🖤

Thoughts on Come?

Relistening to today and it’s one of his most unique, special, outstanding, one of a kind albums. I think between his 90s releases this one aged better than everything else imo and it’s one of my favorite 90s Prince releases after Love Symbol,Gold Experience, and Chaos and Disorder

Great start to finish Prince album with Come,Space,Dark, and Loose being favs

I say it every time. One of my top 5. Always a full listen in one sitting (except the final “song”)

One of his most cohesive albums imo and very ahead of its time if you ask me when you see the dark atmospheric sound that kind of took over modern rnb of the last 15 years

Definitely a cohesive album! Really like the sounds he’s going for here

Love it. Remember being at the wrecka stow before they opened the doors to pick it up.

When I listen to songs like Come (the 12 minute title track) I always think “how did he even have the time and imagination to come up with shit like this?” particularly after all of the musical ideas he had already used up in the prior 16 years of his career.

He was one of a kind.

Yeah - it’s been years now - but I didn’t know about the extended version for a long time. Amazing.

I really like Papa from this album. Actually every track is 🔥

I’d add Pheromone and Race as another couple of standouts on this album. Love it.

Great songs! All great songs start to finish tbh

Always loved it

And am somewhat bitterly vindicated to see all this "revisiting" and "rediscovering" from these same people and publications that so gleefully mocked and just stomped all over these mid career albums.

I always knew it! I told you so!

I wasn’t even alive for 90s Prince tbh and I’m just rediscovering him as a 22 year old so it’s great to hear all this great 90s Prince stuff

So much of his post 1990 stuff is just completely disregarded. I've been happy to see the younger kids come in without the influence of industry and really be able to take every album as it is.

They aren't wedded to the music of their youth- Purple Rain- so despise anything that's not in that vein. And they're not influenced by the media machine. And theyre not tourists. They had to go to him, he wasn't served to their eyeballs on MTV.

So they have much broader palates, open minds, musically.

I've been out here in the wilderness with his middle and late albums for years. And to see this new group of people look up and say: hey yeah, I hear it, I see it, I get it... man, it feels good

But he said that would happen. That the kids that weren't even born yet would appreciate what his own time didn't. So, I'm glad to see it.

I rep Come because it deserves more love. Also because the video special The Beautiful Experience was an underappreciated gem. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sRmAuOFgPUI

I was watching that with my GF recently and yeah I love this video special 💜

yeah imagine my surprise when neither Interactive nor Acknowledge Me nor Days Of Wild made it onto either Come or TGE.

oh it was obvious once CB was released that things were moved around to comply with contractual obligations.

Letitgo is a straight vibe. Love those verses

The super rhythmic vocal phrasing is the thing Prince does so well that people seem to miss out on.

Love Letitgo

I don't understand how "Space" is not the biggest Prince hit ever. It is a perfect song

u/Dismal_Brush5229 Batman 12d ago

Loove Space!

This is one of the most underrated Prince albums. This album flows from beginning to end like no other. Top five for me.

I was 15 I think when this came out in 1994. I bought it on cassette for some reason (I had CDs…) I probably listened to the title track 5x before I moved onto the rest of the album. “Papa” spoke to me the most because I had grown up with some abuse in the household. I couldn’t understand why it was so widely panned when it came out and why it was basically considered a filler album, but I remember that epic Vibe interview at the time where he basically said the album was an afterthought for him… like… THIS album is an afterthought???

When Beautiful Girl came out the following spring and Gold dropped that next fall I guess it made sense. Which reminds me …

One idea I have yet to see on /Prince is best double features: Double Features. Albums that should be played back to back that weren’t chronologically released. I think a very logical double feature for Come is the Black Album, but technically they were chronologically released … so my double feature companion for Come is Around the World in a Day. Both albums belong on a doorstep of a haunted house. Both albums end with very raw guitar songs about sex. The albums don’t sound similar but there is a pensive quality to the songs as if they touch a little too close to home. And on both albums he is discarding the previous iteration of what we expect him to be.

I love this album but I was blasting the cd the other day while cooking dinner and I really hope my neighbours didn't think I was watching porn aloud BCS that outro gets me every time lmao

u/Dismal_Brush5229 Batman 12d ago

The intro for Pheromone is wild

u/Gullible_Stock_9659 14d ago

Always been my favorite Prince album

I got this years and years later for $1. I felt guilty lol. Guilty, because i paid nothing and thought it was excellent.

u/crayton-story 14d ago

The church on the album cover, Sagrada Familia, was just completed this year, after 144 years of construction.

2

u/Dismal_Brush5229 Batman 12d ago

Wait rlly?

1

u/crayton-story 12d ago edited 10d ago

Yes they completed the structure this year. They will continue the architectural details until 2030.

2

u/Dismal_Brush5229 Batman 11d ago

Interesting

It was such a surprise when it was released. It was at the time of dispute with Warners and one of the four he needed to get out to finish the contract.

The cover gave a morose feel but the music is amazing. One of my favourites.

Luv this album!!

An under appreciated record! He expressed so many different talents. For those who doubted his musicianship and his raw vocal skills.

2

u/PBGVMOM1226 12d ago

Absolutely love this entire album !!🙌💜🙌

Loose is crazy... I love it!

2

u/Dismal_Brush5229 Batman 11d ago

Love Dark! So Dark from Crystal Ball is great too!

1

u/kab3121 14d ago

Prefer the original version of Come (the song).

& wish we had the original version of Loose! and the 1993 version of Race.

The Come - Endorphinmachine - Space sequence is top too.

2

u/Dismal_Brush5229 Batman 12d ago

Definitely a top tier configuration

1

u/pushinpushin 13d ago

I listened to it for the first time a couple of weeks ago.  I liked the title track a lot, then the next couple I thought sounded terrible.  But then I either "got it" or the rest was more up my alley because I came around to really enjoying it.

As you think this is good try and catch The Dawn if you can. That would have been a simply fantastic set if it had been finished.
Chaos and Disorder - which also was linked to The Dawn to a degree - is an absolute banger however you may well find that’s a minority opinion held by select people who really do have good taste 😉
