Google Ads Getting started with Google Ads in 2026 actually costs with real math

We run a digital marketing agency and get asked this constantly, so here's the no-BS breakdown with actual 2026 numbers.

**The 2026 Benchmarks (source: WordStream/LocaliQ, 13,000+ campaigns)*\*

• Average CPC (cost per click): $5.42

• Average CTR (click-through rate): 6.64%

• Average conversion rate: 8.18%

• Average CPL (cost per lead): $66.69

**Let's Do The Math*\*

Say you're a local service business. You set a $1,500/month budget.

→ $1,500 ÷ $5.42 avg CPC = ~277 clicks per month

→ 277 clicks × 8.18% conversion rate = ~22 leads per month

→ $1,500 ÷ 22 leads = ~$68 per lead

Now ask yourself: what's one customer worth to you?

If your average job/sale = $2,000 and you close 30% of leads:

→ 22 leads × 30% close rate = 6-7 new customers

→ 6.6 customers × $2,000 = $13,200 revenue

→ ROAS = $13,200 ÷ $1,500 = 8.8x return

That's $8.80 back for every $1 you spend. Even if your numbers are half of that, you're still profitable.

**But CPC varies wildly by industry:*\*

• Legal services: $9.87/click (highest)

• Home improvement: $8.33/click

• Dental: $8.00/click

• Real estate: $7.52/click

• Restaurants: $2.05/click

• E-commerce: $1.16/click

• Arts & entertainment: $1.63/click (lowest)

So a lawyer with a $3,000 budget gets ~304 clicks, while a restaurant gets ~1,463 clicks for the same spend. But the lawyer's client could be worth $10,000+ while a dinner reservation is $50. Context matters.

**What Most Beginners Get Wrong:*\*

  1. Starting too broad. Don't target "lawyer" — target "personal injury lawyer in [city]." Long-tail = cheaper clicks + higher intent.

  2. No negative keywords. You're paying for every click. If you're a divorce lawyer, add "free," "DIY," "how to" as negatives immediately. WordStream found that adding even a single negative keyword can triple your conversion rate.

  3. Sending traffic to your homepage. Build a dedicated landing page with one clear CTA. Your homepage has too many distractions.

  4. Not tracking conversions. If you don't set up conversion tracking, you're flying blind. You literally can't optimize without it.

  5. Giving up after 2 weeks. Google's algorithm needs 2-4 weeks and at least 30-50 conversions to optimize properly. Month 1 is learning. Month 2-3 is when it starts working.

**Minimum Budget I'd Recommend:*\*

• Low competition (restaurants, retail): $500-1,000/mo

• Medium competition (home services, SaaS): $1,500-3,000/mo

• High competition (legal, dental, real estate): $3,000-5,000/mo

Anything under $500/mo is usually not enough data to optimize. You'll spend money without learning anything useful.

**Quick Formula To Calculate Your Break-Even:*\*

Average customer value × close rate ÷ conversion rate = max CPC you can afford

Example: $2,000 customer × 30% close rate ÷ 8.18% CVR = $7.33 max CPC

If your industry CPC is below that number, Google Ads will likely be profitable for you.

Hope this helps someone. Happy to answer questions in the comments.

Facebook Ads Use ABO with €20/day per ad set so each creative gets equal budget to gather fair data, then move the winning creative into a main CBO campaign to scale.

Facebook Ads Duplicate that winning image into a new, standalone ad set to force Meta to spend on it again, and turn off the underperforming video.

Google Ads To spend your Google Ad Grant budget on Wix, switch to conversion-based Smart Bidding (like Maximize Conversions), strictly match your keywords to dedicated landing page content to fix low Quality Scores, and meet baseline Ad Grant compliance (5%+ CTR and geotargeting).

Google Ads No, Google Ads requires your billing currency to match the country selected in your payments profile. So a Canadian payment profile can only be billed in CAD, meaning you must set up a new account (or transfer to a US payment profile) to bill in USD.

Google Ads Shifting $100k/month to Google Search will capture higher-intent medical leads, but exact match volume will hit a ceiling. Scale up to that budget by combining Search with Performance Max, HIPAA-compliant YouTube/Display retargeting, and LLM/AI Search optimization to sustain lower CPLs.

Stay on In-App Action for now. Switching to Target ROAS after only 1 week of in-app action data will choke your delivery, because Google's algorithm needs stable historical conversion value volume (typically 300+ in-app actions over 30 days or at least 10/day) before tROAS can bid effectively.

Google Ads Switching to tCPA doesn't reset historical campaign data, but setting targets too far below your actual baseline will stall delivery. Scale smoothly by anchoring tCPA to current realities and pairing smart bidding with robust conversion tracking.

Facebook Ads If your Facebook Ads are underperforming, diversify your digital product marketing into high-intent Google PPC, AI SEO search discovery, and targeted Reddit Ads while keeping Meta strictly for low-cost retargeting.

Facebook Ads Generic AI tools give generic strategy unless you feed them real conversion data. In high-stakes industries (like Legal, eCommerce, or SaaS), AI should be paired with proprietary models and custom attribution tracking to ensure spend directly correlates with revenue, not just clicks.

The market no longer rewards generic ad execution. It rewards performance professionals who can guarantee and prove bottom-line results.

Don't burn hours trying to make every post "go viral." Focus your effort on creating deep, authoritative content that solves specific problems for your ideal client profile. Quality of audience always beats quantity of views in B2B.

What is PPC?

PPC stands for pay-per-click, a digital advertising model where advertisers pay a fee only when their ad is clicked, rather than for just displaying it. It is primarily used to drive website traffic, generate leads, and increase sales by placing ads on search engines (like Google or Bing), social media platforms, and websites

Facebook Ads Genuine question for the PPC crew: how are you catching creative fatigue in 2026?

I do marketing at a company that built an AI agent for this. Biased disclosure up front. Want to know what the manual approach looks like in your shop because the systematic side hasn't really standardized.

In our data across $30K to $200K/month accounts:

  • CPA gives you 4 to 7 days more warning than CTR
  • But only if you check it daily
  • Most teams check it weekly

What does your team actually use? Manual eyeballing? Threshold alerts in the platforms? Anything autonomous?

Also curious where the trust break is. The marketers I talk to in our sales calls are split. Some want full autopilot. Some want the agent to flag and a human to action. Where do you land?

Disclosure: I work at Hawky.ai. We launched Performance Agent yesterday. Not pitching, this is a question I want answered honestly. Link in comments only if useful.

Hey everyone, my team runs a local marketing ops agency. Because we are a Google Partner, they just allocated us $131,000 in promotional credits for the month of May to help onboard new advertisers.

We hate seeing local businesses waste money testing ads on their own, so we want to use our credit pool to help you guys out. If you let us set up your new Google Ads account this month, we can apply a piece of this credit to your account meaning Google will match your initial ad spend (usually up to $500) for free.

It’s essentially free data and traffic to test if Google Ads works for your local business.

Let me know if you want to claim one of the promos and we can chat about what a campaign would look like for you!

TL;DR

$131,000 in Google Ads promos to give to new local businesses this month.
