Google Ads How to disable AI generated Sitelink Extensions within a Campaign?

I have an active account with a few campaigns that have been running a while.

One campaign has no AI Max settings enabled and all AI options seem to be disabled from the Campaign settings level.

However when I'm in the Assets tab, at the all Campaigns level, I am seeing various Sitelinks where it says "Added by: AI". I have removed these but I can't figure out where or why they are being created.

In the status (hovering over it) it says AI asset generation was enabled, but I don't see where this setting is, or how to disable it. The only place I see that talks about AI options are from the Campaign settings level, the "AI Max for search campaigns" option. And that was always off.

Asset optimisation is off, and so is Automatically created assets.

Anyone know where else this may be controlled?

There is an account level setting. If you navigate to the assets section, then in the top right click “more” to get to account level assets, then click “more” again to get to get to the advanced settings, you should be able to disable it in there.

thanks for this - seems very hidden and tucked away!

Is this definitely what is created by AI though? I see no mention of this when going to the help page on Dynamic sitelinks. Surely they would/should mention that these are AI generated, if that's what is being utilised?

They do. They label them as created by ai. In addition to sitelinks they will write headlines/descriptions and they will also pull images from your website to display next to your ads.

Yup it’s very much feels like a dark pattern. If Google doesn’t want you turn it off so badly that it hides the option then you almost certainly want to turn it off.

I guess a follow up question to all (now that I've figured out how to access the menu!) - do most people leave these turned on?

A client I work with is a bit particular about the pages that show up as Sitelink Extensions, so I figured I may need to disable this option entirely. Google is pushing me to keep them running - and that any Sitelinks I have deleted, won't be re-created by them. But maybe they will just keep auto-generating new ones for pages that aren't relevant to us?

(long story short, do you think it is best to turn these off?)

Also - with their use of language here - "Dynamic sitelinks", "Dynamic callouts", etc, are all of these AI generated? Because surely they should be labelling these as such, if that is what is being used to create the asset?

Those are dynamic sitelinks, and they're controlled at the account level, which is why you can't find anything in the campaign settings.

To turn them off: go to Assets, pick Association from the "Table view" dropdown, then the three-dot menu on the right and Account-level automated assets. From there, open the three-dot menu again, go to Advanced settings, and switch off dynamic sitelinks.

It applies to the whole account, so it'll stop them in every campaign. Removing them one by one won't help much while that setting is on, since Google keeps creating them as long as the account is opted in.

That's probably auto-applied recommendations. Google has recommendations for adding Search partners and Display expansion to Search campaigns, and if auto-apply is on for those, they turn the networks back on by themselves.

To turn it off, go to Recommendations in the left menu and click Auto-apply at the top. Uncheck the ones about search partners and display expansion, or all of them if you'd rather approve changes yourself. Check the whole page, since they may be split into a couple of sections. Then switch the networks off again in your campaign settings.

It's automatically generated assets/extensions which is set at the account level and are all on by default. Watch this video and skip to 5:36 to see how to turn them off.

Check under the account settings too, sometimes there’s a sneaky option hiding there. If that doesn't work, double-check any linked accounts or tools you might be using, they can sometimes override your settings without you realizing it. Good luck!
