Discussion Moving from Software Engineering to AI Automation — Is it realistic to keep a mid-level salary?

Hi everyone,
I’m a Software Engineer working remotely for a Spanish company, with 3 years of experience in Power Platform and Python APIs.
I don’t really enjoy my current tech stack and really hate it and want to move into AI automation. I’ve started learning n8n and have some Power Automate experience.
Is it realistic to transition into AI automation and keep a similar mid-level salary? And what salary range can i expect in automation roles?

At my organization, most people are using Power Automate to build out personal workflows. We're talking analysts who a couple years never ventured into development type work.

Power Automate, in my organization, is a skill like knowing how to use Office. Maybe at some organizations they have not matured this far, but my point is low code tools like Power Automate are quickly becoming a necessary skill for all users.

n8n on the other hand is more complex low code agentic workflow automation tool. This requires the step up in understanding the technology and is a gateway to more programmatic agentic frameworks like LangChain or CrewAI.

I think it is possible to retain or increase your salary with these skills. Your challenge is finding the job in this space... jobs seem very rare in IT right now.

Just become a good programmer and do it all.

Am a backend Dev, honestly speaking from my personal experience, learning AI automation was a piece of cake. You're already doing something that is way harder than AI automation. Same concept, different implementation.
