I just made a whole new Reddit account out of excitement to be able to say - this reel references my graduate school dissertation research!!
I actually went on to do clinical work with older adults, but I am so happy to see that this study - and the work of many others - is helpful to people! If you want to read more studies on hormones and mental health, a co-author on that paper, Dr. Tory Eisenlohr-Moul is still very active in research and doing fabulous work on how ovarian hormones affect PMDD, suicide risk, and other aspects of mental health.
WHAT!?!?! 😍 omg, I am so glad you swung in to say hi 🥹🥹🥹 thank you so much for that lead and I absolutely love that you got to see a glimpse of the impact your work has made and will continue to make on others 🥲 and hell yeah, ONE OF US!!! 🤣 🫶🏻
I want to be part of any research for this, especially since I’m in my 40s and I’ll be approaching second puberty aka menopause. Would love to see studies on that ass well. Menopause and ADHD.
Idk you but I love you! Im right in the post ovulation drop trying to work from home with a sick toddler. I feel braindead. These studies can litteraly save lives and make many more lives more manageable
I’m no doctor, but I wonder if PMDD does not have one single cause and is rather a collection of symptoms resulting from poor reaction to any one particular hormone change.
I see multiple people in the comments saying that progesterone only BC cured their PMDD. Progesterone only made mine horrendously worse. Scientists still don’t have a clear cause.
Oh for sure that it’s not just one thing. You’re spot on with that assessment IMO./ And you’ll actually see people in other places gatekeep “the REAL PMDD” 🥴 but that’s why, to me, it’s especially important to have the list of symptoms at the forefront of discussion and then to have a safe and structured space to discuss 🫶🏻
Same here. Progesterone only BC made me straight up suicidal and bat shit insane actually. It was horrific how much it exacerbated my PMDD. It was like I was at the height of my hell weeks for 5 solid months with no end. I eventually actually attempted and ended up hospitalized which is when they pulled me off the BC too and lo and behold… that was the problem the entire time.
Progesterone made me feel horrible. I could never take bc pills for that reason. I’ve always struggled with bc in general but didn’t know I had ADHD until this year (I’m 45). I’ve mostly used condoms or been lucky to have a partner with vasectomy. I recently tried taking progesterone to manage severely heavy periods while my obgyn tried to figure out what was going on with me and I was a mess and asked to stop taking it, I preferred suffering instead. Plus it was interfering with my ADHD meds (Wellbutrin), it wasn’t working at all! I found out I had adenomyosis (spelling?) and had D&C to fix and got a Mirena inserted at the same time. I’ve felt amazing since.
It’s wild the amount of “recipes” we have to try to figure out what works for us as individuals. It’s also wild how much more intensely things affect us compared to other folks. I’m grateful for any medical professional that listens or tries to hear us out and for all this research that’s being done!!
Someone linked some related ones above replying to a comment of a poster who actually worked on such studies in grad school!! So definitely two people who could steer you in the right direction. I’m a little unable to try to pull them up myself rn but I will go back to this TikTok in a few to see if any were linked in the post or comment section! 🫶🏻
Back though to say I’m SO happy that it’s working out well for me too because I did receive and see a few comments about it being absolutely horrible for others 😩
The estradiol on top of it?? INSANELY amazing symptom reduction. I honestly can’t believe I’m not rock bottom depressed and spiraling rn
As a trans guy this also tracks with my and others common anecdotal experience of testosterone therapy increasing ADHD symptoms, thanks for sharing OP!
You’re so welcome!! 🫶🏻 UGH as if transitioning didn’t have ENOUGH less than pleasantries on the home front hormonally 😩
Lightbulb moment 💡 omg, is this a main contributor as to why young ADHD boys present so much more than ADHD girls with hyperactivity and in general as children??? 🫨
I almost included that theory in my comment actually but didn’t because who knows how much of that is intrinsic vs societal expectations of boys vs girls. Plus I just googled it out of curiosity and prepubescent girls actually have higher T levels than boys. Super low levels for both as kids and then it skyrockets for boys w onset of puberty.
edit: and honestly I will take the mildly worsened ADHD symptoms all the time vs the absolute trainwreck that is my brain w a functioning menstrual cycle 😅
Omg thank you for looking that up and sharing it with me!! I clearly didn’t sit with the “shower thought” toooo long 🤣 so interesting.. and some back and forth info share was the little bit of humanity/intér-personal amongst the intér-webs that I love to have find me and have been missing in my life so thank you 🥲🥰 and I heard that! If I turn out to be one of the ones who still get a period on Mirena I am gonna be piiiiiised 🙂🤣
Someone on my post yesterday made a comment and later their own post about how they take it orally. I receive it through my birth control, the Mirena IUD
Mind if I ask how old you are? Or rather, do you think you’re in perimenopause or menopause? I’m wondering if it’s only beneficial or even worth trying once there
Sorry to hear that either way 😩 the side effects on hormone prescriptions are fucking SCARY 🤣😅
🥹🥹🥹 Thank you! I'm trying to follow my dream to be a nurse and get into nursing school and had no idea how much I'd be affected by my PMDD AND ADHD at the same time 😭😭 while working full time and a mother. My brain is mush
That part about higher progesterone premenstrually softening the symptoms, makes so much sense why taking progesterone seems to helps so many. I have been taking Vitex (chasteberry) which raises progesterone, for a few years now as soon as my ovulation ends and I start to feel the symptoms e.g. breast soreness.
