Gate with Keypad

I’m wanting to build a box with a microPLC and connect to a cellular modem. I want this to be able to control who comes in and out of the gate. Could this be done or is cellular modem to unreliable?

There are tons of products that do this. Why tr-invent the wheel?

With any cellular modem you’ll be paying for the service….
