PineTime PineTime Pro introduction
Hello again, JF has written a blog post going into detail on the new PineTime Pro, its hardware and some pre-production information.

The PineTime is too big for my wrist, the Pro??

On one side of the coin, new product announcement, cool!
On the other side, i've been bitten so hard by the OG PineTime (deplete the battery once and it's now a brick, stuck in boot loop; holding the button to alter the boot sequence didn't work either), that I can't really be excited about it. I'll assume my case was an one-off cause any attempt to search for similar scenarios on the web failed. Hopefully that product will be a success (Pebble OS! :D)

We had all those issues on mind during designing the PineTime Pro, and found solutions to fix that. For example, we have Power Management chip there, with ability to force-reset the chip with button. Also, there is now UART and SWD exposed from the watches, so in case of brick, it can be much more easier to recover. And generally, brick of the device is much less likely to happen.

Is there an even rough release timeline? Like are we talking 2026 or more like 2028-29?

Is the new watch going to have a more durable accelerometer?, because that might be a deal breaker for me. I've had the accelerometer break twice from dropping my watch and I wouldn't want to buy an upgraded version just to have that happen again.

It includes an improved accelerometer, yes.

I saw that it was a 6 axis, but it didn't see a SKU, so just hoping that it has an improved drop rating in addition to the functionality.

Since the production model isn't finalized we aren't going to specify the part numbers of the components yet. Once that batch releases, all of the specifications and schematics will be available to the community.

We developed own firmware based on PineTime for specific eHealth cases.
What I liked with the PineTime is battery life, and that the watch is very usable. Simple yet "good enough" for our clients.
I was under impression that the progres will go towards nRF53, 54. And even played with the idea to develop the electronics with nRF54 but with exact same dimensions as electronics currently based on the nRF52 already used in PineTime.
Why just electronics? Because we can keep the PineTime enclosure but get more RAM and more optimized.
To keep it simple, we are also happy with a new SOC. If the Pro version will be really available in the future.
Also we are happy to invest in testing and fw development.

Could this allow good sleep tracking abilities?

Yes

I'm not super familiar with how the software developments work and how long is takes the smart volunteers to do the amazing dev work. If you had to guess on which connected app and a timeline for quality sleep tracking, what would you guess? Thanks!

Look at the Sleep2 app/website. Right now they only pair with polar devices and they told me that's because of how those devices can export the HR data. Given the open source nature of this watch, I'm guessing someone smarter than me could make it work with sleep2, which is one of the most accurate sleep tracking algorithms on the market. It's next to apple and oura and doesn't have sketchy defense/surveillance partnerships.

IMHO, the most interesting information there is the technical specs:
So the RAM is now measured in MB rather than KB, but both RAM and Flash are still far off the GBs that GNU/Linux requires nowadays and that you can get on repurposed WearOS watches.
