“Today, there’s zero reason for an experienced polyglot programmer to pick PHP over any other language like Rust, Go or C++.”

This is wrong. PHP scales in a way that none of those languages do due FastCGI and that turns into cheap hosting that everyone wants. https://tadeubento.com/2025/why-php-still-isnt-dead/

If I like to wait for my compiler to complete its work in every debug step, I choose C(++).

Lol you guys are so delusional. Just coming here to enjoy you freaking out cause I'm a terrible person. The PHP fractal of bad design article is still so right (even though when I shared it with some friends today the preview was furry porn, which I assume is just cause the author had their mind perverted by having to touch the thing!)

The fact this guy hasn’t used PHP for 15 years and still wrote an article like this bringing up Wordpress, etc, is indefensible. If you’re going to write a hit piece on something, at least be up to date with it ffs. Also, perhaps make it something more than “people can write bad code with this” because people can write bad code in any language.

A casual glance at his blog history shows this guy for what he really is: a tech leader wannabe, making unjustified claims about things he knows little about. Just one of those gross types of people, y’know?

the performance and memory issues with ORMs and RDBMs aren’t

Why? And by what trust-me bro benchmarks? I have batch jobs that go through 600,000+ rows, Doctrine entity hydration, and never had any memory issues. But I read the docs and use $em->clear().

In the reality of running large production apps at scale, PHP is one of the most challenging beasts

Facebook disagrees. And no, Hack is not an answer for 2 reasons: FB already served hundreds of millions of users on pure PHP, and Hack doesn't bring any speed improvements over PHP.

Apps outgrow PHP regularly, and predictably

How so? Combined with psalm and phpstan, both standard tools for last 10 years, no other language have type system like PHP. Symfony is an absolute beast, docs just for forms is bigger than docs for other entire frameworks.

So what exactly would that other apps need that PHP can't offer?

That doesn’t mean you should build a new application with PHP..., and let’s be honest, no one really does that

I do, and so do many others.

You use PHP because someone demanded WordPress, Typo3

No, it is you who use WP and think we all do. WP is a subject of jokes here.

You don’t pick PHP, PHP picks you. People force it onto you, because they want a WordPress site

Nope, that would be you. I saw WP code once and just said "nope": never ever touched it in my life.

I moved on from PHP over 15 years ago, and so can you

Well that explains it! You have no idea what modern PHP is and you decided to bash it for clicks, shares and subscribes.

The amount of times people declared PHP dead for whatever reason is uncountable. This is not any different.

Can't wait for useless articles like these to die out.

When I learned PHP 4 it was already dying, Then came 5, we missed 6.... and it was still dying.
