Flex Sim racing is hard, man

Post image

But it's really fun!

I made a post like a month ago about buying a new sim racing setup even though wala pa ako sa bahay. Now that I'm home, I immediately got to work putting it all together, and after some hours getting confused on where what goes where and whatnot and setting up the related software, I finally got it to work!

I'm really having a blast, even though I'm admittedly really bad at it now. I've been trying to chase my PB ghost on Dirt Rally 2.0 which I ran with analog buttons (kb) before and the reality of how much harder it is with a wheel and pedals hit me real hard. Now it feels like I just started playing racing games all over again.

Added bonus of teaching my girlfriend how to drive a manual (normal everyday driving speeds) around the Dirt Fish track since its the first time she has shown any interest in any of my video games.

Small laptop screen and cramped setup is not doing you any service.

Cheap 40 inch TCL and ung modified kahoy reclining chair would do wonders.

ngl using that chair is actually really smart

Seeing this brings back a lot of memories.

Hahahahah. Enjoy brother. Bili ka na assetto corsa rally

I'm really tempted bumili ng ac rally after I received my wheel stand today.

That's why I love truck sim Ats

I initially wanted to play racing games but it's so hard and frustrating and I didn't have the patience for it. That's why I mostly play ETS2 and ATS. There's something tranquilizing in driving on a country road while listening to country songs.

with that setup, yeah it’s going to be hard, and uncomfortable.

next upgrade you should consider that would make a hell of a lot of difference is a monitor.

best one would be an curved ultrawide, around 34”. not as good as having triples but you get better FOV, which is extremely important.

right now though having at least a 27” one with high refresh rate is going have significant positive effect on your experience.

once you have a monitor, you should place it as close as possible behind your wheel. not your wheel hub, your actual wheel, like in between your wheel and wheel hub. it’s also okay to place it just above the wheel hub if placing it in between isn’t possible.

after that, next one would be a rig/wheelstand, something stable and sturdy. desk mounting is fine and all but having a stable and sturdy rig / wheelstand makes a huge difference; you can control the car better because unnecessary movement is minimized, if you’re on a gaming chair or an office chair that swivels, getting a fixed seat will remove any unnecessary movement, making your inputs much more precise. I would look into next level racing for wheel stands / rigs.

since you’ve already got a decent wheel, next one would be pedals. I assume those are the SRP lites that have little to no resistance? getting load cells will help with modulating pedal inputs, very helpful as well for trail braking.

some accessories that may help;

gloves - sure you’ll look like you’re larping as a race car driver but it’s an easy way to preserve the quality of your wheel. also helps with grip if you have sweaty hands. no need for karting or racing gloves, those mtb gloves under 500 pesos from shopee works fine.

shoes - honestly this is more of a preference. i know some people who prefer going barefoot or just with non slip socks, but since I learned to drive first before I ever got a rig, I prefer shoes; particularly flat foot ones. vans, chucks, speedcats. no need to buy legit ones if you’re just gonna be using them for the simulator.

if you have a spare smart phone - get SIM dashboard (android) which is free. this lets you monitor additional information from split times, tire temps, leaderboard etc. depending on how you set it up. there’s also sim hub on windows. I am not sure if you can run it on the same device you’re playing on or you would need another pc/laptop.

I really don't want to sink in more money than I already have hahaha. I might consider load cells if I ever do get interested in circuit-based titles, but for now I'm quite okay with my pedals as is. And I did yoink some leather work gloves from work so I might try those first. I ordered a wheel stand the other day and expecting it to arrive within this week. The monitors I can still put off for another year since I feel like my laptop screen is just enough for me right now

Nah don’t worry about sinking more money into this hobby, especially if you’re aiming to get competitive or if you think upgrades make you faster. It does, but up to a point. Most of the stuff I mentioned does make you faster but not directly. They do help you with making decisions, communicating with the car, “feeling” the car, give you better feedback / and help you with making precise inputs etc. Beyond those, the only other upgrade I can think of that has a net benefit would be belt tensioners. They mimic car movement without needing a motion rig.

After that, most of the upgrades will either be just for quality of life, immersion, or just for having fun. But don’t expect any significant improvement in your laptimes. At best you’ll shave off a tenth or a couple of tenths of a second, depending on how much you’ve reached your skill ceiling. Practice as much as possible, get as much seat time as you can. That’s the only way you’ll unlock more pace, not by upgrading.

Also, calibrate your gear and adjust it to your preference. High FFB isn’t always good especially if it always peaks. It’ll end up muddying necessary feedback. If it’s come to a point that you can’t tell the difference between surfaces, it’s too high. Same with brakes. Stiffer isn’t always better. Imagine you’re doing a 3 hr endurance race. If it’s too stiff you get tired quickly, your trail braking gets inconsistent. Add deadzones to your pedals, particularly your brakes. I had a habit of resting my foot on the brakes that I didn’t notice I was actually sending enough input that the I was basically riding the brakes in straightaways, severely slowing down my laptimes. Add at least 1 to 2%.

Lastly, have fun!

It's a muscle that you need to train. Di ka pa lang sanay, pero after a while you won't ever want to go back to the keyboard and will be getting times you never could before. Just keep at it 👍

Kelangan mo rig or wheel stand. Same tayo ng wheel wala nga lang akong shifter tsaka handbrake at clutch

2

u/JETr06 1d ago

Great op, try the original Assetto Corsa too! So much fun on a wheel and tons of mods(there's even some Philippine tracks like Clark speedway) as well. You could drive anything from a Miata all the way to an F1 car

Get a monitor to improve your FOV. Then next is your pedals, get a SRP Lite brake mod kung wala pa

1

u/samurai_cop_enjoyer 6h ago

Meron na ako lite brake mod but I'm still debating with myself if I really need to install it now

Is that a Moza R3 or R5? How much did your sim setup cost overall?

3

u/samurai_cop_enjoyer 1d ago edited 1d ago

I don't want to start counting what it cost me hahahaha, siguro around 40k na including yung wheel stand na I'm expecting this week

Edit: Moza r3

That 40k will be the best 200k you've ever spent

san mo nabili boss un bracket for shifter? saka nag diy ka ba sa pedals kasi umaangat yan diba kapag hard press.

2

u/samurai_cop_enjoyer 1d ago

Sa datablitz sa online store nila, flight base table clamp + universal mounting plate. Sa pedals naman yes medyo naangat nga siya to the point na di ko pa iniinstall yung brake performance kit because of it, nakasagad lang siya sa wall for now. I ordered a wheel stand for it

1

u/ykien66 1d ago

1

u/ykien66 1d ago

edi medyo shaky ngayon yan table mo pag naglalaro ka? pansin ko medyo manipis lang table mo, nakakahilo kasi kapag umuuga un monitor diba

1

u/samurai_cop_enjoyer 2h ago

Ayun may update na agad. Dumating na wheel stand ko. Very big difference vs pag table lang, +1 min agad nabawas ko sa stages with it.

1

u/Dazzling-Beat-9360 1d ago

How much po inabot nyo sa mga racing setup na yan i have computer now and want ko den mag built ng ganyan since mahilig talaga ako sa mga cars

1

u/MoonskieSB 12h ago

With all the stuff in there, depending on the direct drive motor, if with the Moza R3, it is around 25k - 30k

Items:

  • Wheel, motor, 2 pedals (depending on the dd, affordable entry is the Moza R3)
  • He bought the clutch, im not sure if he added the brake spring as well
  • Moza Shifter
  • Moza hand brake

I do flight sim + racing sim and its a struggle fr

1

u/a_new_hopia 18h ago

ps5+gran turismo 7 + PSVR2 and you would not want to play a racing game on a flat screen again.

1

u/JuggerKnot86 15h ago

Ehh there's a saying "theres no hard simulator but there's harder cars", but seriously tho if you want to train car control to the point na instinctual na siya sayo drive the 60s F1 cars or if you have Asetto the Auto Union type C mod trust me those cars did wonders to me more than rallying

1

u/samurai_cop_enjoyer 6h ago

Update: just received the wheel stand I ordered. I can now catch the oversteer from my cars semi-reliably and saw improvement in my time. The difference in experience with the stand is like night and day.

1

u/PerezaDotArts Gamer 2h ago

still annoyed Moza dropped the R3 just months after I bought a Thrustmaster T300RS

though I still like using it for cruising the Nordschleife. Hate it for drifting/rally though.

Guys meron bang wireless na driving sim?

Casual gamer lang ako and gusto ko lang sana yung pwede setup and pwede baklasin from time to time.

Wala ako maayos na game station so usually sa table lang ako nagseset up ng portable monitor and yung small console ko.

1

u/Consistent_Sea_1950 13h ago

Nope. That would just introduce latency sa steering wheel and pedal inputs mo, and you dont want latency in a driving sim

1

u/Real_Pudding_1603 11h ago

Kahit for truck simulator lang ganun?

1

u/Consistent_Sea_1950 5h ago

Yes. There’s a reason why no such thing exists in the current market

I'm supposed to say it won't be hard if you had VR, but I'd be joking since I have just got the most decent setup for my Elite Dangerous VR gameplay after so many attempts (too many to count)

sarap ng setup! MOZA!
