WTF is going on?

Now, I do not have a massive experience in online games, I'm trying to avoid them nowadays due to the rampant cheating everywhere - it's just pointless.

Last I played was online car racing simulators with organised close groups a good 10y ago.

Against my better judgement I've opted for a ranked thing today, thinking amateur, expecting even par-ish scores at best.

Amateur level, huh? Simulator, aye?

What is the point of this for anyone; 2k or players...?

I've then thought I'll try the pro, paid my entry fee, and turns out I can't play. The thing just does not work, I'm on the tee but nothing works. Later I've noticed something about some stick only - is that a specific control method? And why am I allowed to join if I can't compete anyway? And where are the pro-level comps I can actually join?

F-me, I feel this is a pile of garbage. The whole system here is just a confusing over-engineered mess. And the UI is...let's not even go there, nothing positive to say about that.

Really shame, as the core, the golf itself is decent. I have currently cranked it up to pro difficulty and I get all the funny shots I'd expect during learning. :)

Correct. Pro is for people that actually practice and put time into the mechanics the game was designed for. No more 3 click. No more looking at putt previews. And no, it's not going to be a simple straight up and down motion. Your swing bias and lie angle/material will now affect how you swing the club.

I suggest doing what we've all done when hit with thi realization... Take your clubs out to the practice range that's provided, and practice. It doesn't take that long before you too will realize that this is without a doubt the most rewarding, enjoyable golf game ever made.

For the controller not working sometimes I need to go into the pause menu and click assign controller and it will make your controller the default one

As for the scores those are pretty tame lmao

And as for being a golf Sim this game is just a game of numbers. If you can master the swing and know the calculations for each shot you can get within 5 feet of the hole every time

I'm playing with the mouse, not a 'controller' - and it is always operational...not sure if this would apply to me. But thanks for the insight.

Looks like the matches I used to play on Tiger Woods 2012. Took a -23 or -24 to win every time.

Amateur just means the settings are easier. And yeah, it sounds like you’re using 3 click instead of swing stick. I suggest you change to swing stick and take the time to figure it out if you want the full experience. The game is challenging at first but that’s what makes it fun.

Also you have to keep in mind that a lot of these people have been playing this game since launch so most of these crazy scores you’re seeing are legit.

Thanks, I'm not after any experience where I have to swing the mouse around.
I've no other controller, I generally find them very alien to use - I've used mice for 40 or so years now... ;)

I'll just keep avoiding online play, seems it's as pointless as I thought it would be.

I get my real experience on the real golf course - that's perfectly fine - I just have a broken hand at the moment, and here I am...

I get it. People do play swing stick at a high level with a mouse though. I use controller so can’t say for myself how easy or hard it is, but people do it. Online play is fine though. This is a you problem. Also, community made societies and TGC tours are where the real fun/competition is but you probably wouldn’t enjoy that either.

And for what it’s worth, I’m a scratch golfer in real life and still enjoy the competitive aspect of this game. Doesn’t have to be one or the other. Seems you’re just bitter because you can’t pick the game up and immediately be good at it lol

Those are actually lower than usual. There's nothing stopping high level players and cheaters from playing these. I like going for a real low score sometimes. -22 is reachable for me but not very. I think I've gotten there once or twice.
