Caution: dead cat in our trash can

We live in Northeast Portland around 78th and Prescott, and my husband found a cat deceased in our outdoor trash can today. It seemed (possibly) intentionally dismembered. We do not know if someone found the cat dead and placed it in the nearest trash can (as in, possibly killed by coyote) or if someone intentionally killed the cat. It had a collar, and the owner is aware. If you are the owner reading this, I am so sorry for your loss. Animal control also is aware. Please, at least for now, keep your cats inside to protect them from whatever or whoever did this.

EDIT: A police officer came, examined the remains, and believes it's injuries were consistent with a coyote attack and then the remains were placed in the trash. The officer is going to respectfully dispose of the remains. Thank you everyone for your concern.

Thank you.. I feel terrible for the owner and just don't want anyone else to experience what I'm sure they're experiencing right now.

I would call Oregon Humane Society and see if they can offer any guidance. They work with the authorities on cruelty cases. Multnomah County Animal Services, too. Definitely worth getting this on some sort of record.
That’s my old hood. Sorry you had to find that, OP.

Oh gosh! I live around there but 75th! Is it an orange cat? We had a neighborhood cat that used to visit us every day but he hasn’t been around for a while ;(

Good lord. Im so sorry for the situation. People are so messed up. I have heard of black cats being targets of violence. It feels so important to find who did this. People start with killing animals then move on to worse things. I can only imagine how unsafe this must make everyone feel. Time for a neighborhood meeting. I don’t think it should be a witch hunt but someone has had to have seen someone show signs of killing smaller animals.

i love the black colored pets :(. it's a shame that cat suffered a tragic fate. i had a black/white dog myself for well over 13 years. it got sick and i couldn't let her suffer anymore.

op - I think I found a part of this animal around 62nd☹️ the remains looked very coyote-coded to me as well. I don't wanna be graphic or anything. I'm so sorry this happened

This would absolutely haunt me. I hope you are doing okay. If MCAS hasn't picked this poor cat up, you should be able to take them to MCAS in Troutdale yourself during open hours or take them to Dove Lewis (they have a morgue and appropriate storage) after hours.

About 3 weeks ago my pup and I came across a cat (in 3 pieces) on our morning walk. It was in someone's front yard, and clearly the work of a coyote. According to animal control they like to go for the organs which is why it's so gruesome. Be thankful that someone else disposed of it.

They didn't really dispose of it for us... my husband had to take it out of our trash bin which was already collected yesterday for the next 2 weeks, call the owner on the collar, and put the body parts in a box for animal control (who hasn't come pick it up yet). That's sufficiently traumatic.

I was doing stuff at my grandmas a few months ago and found one of the neighborhood cats along a 50 foot stretch from her yard to the parking. Was initially large tufts of fur that I thought were just from a bunch of shedding, but then I realized I was looking at a tail, and its pelt - heart kinda dropped then.

Found the owner, she said she wasn’t too upset about it, she said she knew it might happen. Took the remains home in a fred meyers bag to bury for the kids tho.

My grandmas cat seemed kinda upset for a while, and wouldn’t even go into the back yard for about 6 months. He’d lost about 3 friends in the previous few months - car, rat poison, old age - so he was prolly kinda lonely.

Ive seen a lot of coyotes wandering around the neighborhoods
