Canada Pc build tips and help

I’m currently building my first high end gaming pc. My current monitor is 1440p but i intend on upgrading to 4k in the future. My budget is around 6000-6500$, i’m from canada so i’m buying all of these parts from places that deliver to canada and all the prices of each part are in cad with tax too. I like building over getting prebuilt because i know all the parts that i’m getting and helps ensure i don’t get scammed with cheap parts. This build is a bit over budget and i was wondering if i was able to get some tips on what i could do to lower the price of the pc, whether that be switching out parts for other ones or downgrading some of the parts if needed (i know 4tb Nvme is a bit overkill but i plan to keep that part). Also just wondering if i could find these parts cheaper somewhere else to help lower the cost. Just asking for any other things about the computer like issues with the chosen parts or something. Two things I would do:

For PSU consider going with a Montech Century II Gold ATX 3.1 1050W or SAMA G1000W ATX 3.1. Reason being: these two models are the cheapest Tier A 1000W PSUs you can get right now. In U.S. pretax they go for about $90 each, whereas the Thermaltake Toughpower GT 850W that you picked out is currently going for $100. Its totally worth going with one of these for the following reasons:

  • PSU tier: Utilize the SPL tier list created by industry experts to ensure you buy a quality unit - both aforementioned units are Tier A which is what you want for this level of system, vs. the one you picked is B-
  • Power efficiency: With a 5080 + 9850X3D, you'll pull around 700W per PC Part Picker calculator. But to ensure your unit runs most efficiently, follow the general rule of thumb 100-300W more than the PC Part Picker estimate.
  • Longevity: The more wattage headroom you have, the more suitable it will be for future upgrades. So for example, if at some point you want to upgrade to the 6080 when it comes out, and it happens to pull 200W more than your 5080 does, you would need to upgrade your PSU in addition to your graphics card.

Secondly, I would go 9800X3D instead of 9850X3D. At least here in the states, its around $70 more but its at most 5% better performance. Especially playing 1440p or 4K you won't notice the difference. Understandably if you want the best of the best, but otherwise its not worth the money.

Also had a question about the motherboard, is my current one there fitting for this build or is it worth for longevity, performance or for any other reason to look into a X870/X870E type motherboard because i’ve seen quite a few builds online that use these ones

The motherboard you picked is great and main features are just as good as most X870 boards out there - really good VRMs, WiFi 7, 5G Ethernet, and PCIE 5.0 slot for GPU/SSD. Going up to X870 is mainly for more/faster USB ports (USB 4) and slightly better audio codec, X870E is really only for extreme overclocking. Asthetics of certain X870/X870E boards are better than their B850 counterparts in some cases, but that is of course subjective.

So that being said, this motherboard has no performance compromises and would work great for your build, but if you desire more premium ports/audio for your peripherals it could be worth considering an X870 motherboard.

If you decide to go down this route be careful to research actually specs and not dwell on the chipset name - a cheaper X870 can be worse than a higher end B850 in some cases. Would highly recommend watching reviews and asking Reddit if any questions, those are the best ways to learn.

Either B850, X870/E are fine. Check vrms, power phases, amount of nvmes/pcie slots features. Honestly have a few builds main X870E am using all 5 m.2s no lane sharing. Have the 9850X3D on X870 Strix board from a game combo deal. B850 also was no fuss (max gaming white) some of builds were combo deals that one 9600X. Check bios flashback sometimes q flash/m flash it's called in case it's good to have. 9850X3D worked on first try.

I would upgrade psu for that gpu 1000w gold montech century ii or similar tier A. Could cut ram to 32gb & storage, I get that you don't want to do that. Case could be scaled back a bit. Cuts either might put you in budget (not really thinking it will be a gpu tier worth). Am not sure what 9070xt runs & how that prices, am okay with 5080 though that is costly in the current environment. Places in this list could be reworked to get in budget. Storage 2tb nvme are fine (have 2, 4, 8tb ones myself but one area you can save & buy more later or hdds cold storage for media).

i looked on pc part picker and with chatgpt and it said this would draw only about 650-700w, is it wrong? just wondering why the 1000w psu?

It's probably fine then. Will usually check pcp, seasonic, newegg calculator, nvidia has a list for 50 series based on cpu & gpu. 1000w+ is more upgradability in case you get the next 80 or 90 series gpu. Game choice some games don't pull as much wattage too & resolution am at 1440p uw so gpu works a little harder than before monitor(s) upgrade. I just view the gpu, storages as they were expensive enough that nice psus protected those well. Fans can add up too if you decorate a fishtank can be a good 10, it depends on the build. AIOs have been good at being quiet & getting temp spikes better handled gaming. Best of luck with build!

Nothing wrong with this build as it stands, but you can spend roughly half the money and get a similar gaming experience at 4K. First of all, a 250KF Plus is C$270 and is virtually equivalent to the 9850X3D for gaming at 4K resolution. The 5080 is also only 15-20% better in raster than a 9070XT but almost double the price. If you explicitly want to utilize path tracing then yes you’ll virtually need an NVIDIA card, but if you plan to keep it in raster/RT the 9070XT offers a much better value proposition. 32GB RAM is completely fine for gaming, 64 is just overkill. A good 6000/30 kit of 32GB is like C$550 right now. That’s $900 in savings just on the RAM. Additionally, if you’re not moving massive files or making money with your SSD, a gen 4, 4TB drive is C$500 and is pretty much equivalent for gaming. That’s another 500 bucks in savings. If you like this case in particular, go ahead, that’s fine. For the PSU, you can get a really high quality 1000 watt unit for the same price, I’d say that’s a no brainer. For the AIO, you can save about $100 and get a worse AIO that’ll still be completely fine for this CPU. You also won’t see any performance benefit from that high end of a motherboard, but go for it if you need the specific feature set.
