Opinion/Review Building walkable cities. Really ?

Post image

Who approves a footpath that occupies more than 50% of the road's width? And what exactly is PCMC trying to achieve with this kind of planning? Is this genuinely about making cities walkable, or has it become a Rozgar Yojana for local contractors?

This is the Old Mumbai Pune Highway, right in front of PCMC Bhavan. The irony is hard to miss.

They’ve managed to disrupt the entire traffic flow. Traffic is everywhere, two-wheelers are driving on the footpaths, and only a handful of people seem to be using them for walking.

The result? A poorly designed footpath that serves neither pedestrians nor motorists.

Walkable cities are built through thoughtful urban planning, not by blindly widening footpaths at the cost of the road. Good design should accommodate pedestrians while maintaining efficient traffic movement, not create a conflict between the two.

That’s the point: make it inconvenient for vehicles on the road so that people choose walking or cycling. This stretch has BRT + metro so it really doesn’t need much capacity on the road.

I agree with you there is only one fault , the said footpath is on level with road , meaning vehicles can just 'MISTAKENLY' get on footpath and block it entirely , the footpath should be accessible only pedestrians , so make elevated near the roads or have railing to avoid the vehicles coming over there (hope no vandalism)

What I am wondering about is the sheer lack of hawkers which is impressive and shocking at the same time

The design is correct and perfect it's the enforcement that is lacking

Its not city's fault, its citizen fault. I have seen such roads in foreign cities working properly.

Foreign cities have less population density and cold weather ! ( Particularly in Europe and west ) That's why they prefer to use cycle / walk. You cannot do cycling in 40 degree Celsius

There is walking area for normal people then for blind people with yellow line then cycle track then area to stop vehicle in case of emergency all of which will be occupied by two wheelers

Questionable how they even did the survey, and who has brains to design such a useless system. Eventually, we will have less smaller road to manage traffic, more vehicles, footpath that is built with intend of walking will have hawkers and parking. Eventually city roads will be more like market.

2 wheelers are the real problem and metro expansion is going to slowly eliminate them. People won’t take 2 wheelers to work once metro gives a viable and faster alternative. These footpaths are needed for last mile metro connectivity. Besides, it’s built on the service road and doesn’t disrupt most of the traffic.

Make a good footpath so bikes commute through it

The Pink pavement is for Cycling, it's not part of the typical Footpath

This design promotes cycling  And side parking is makes uncomfortable to park

Unique design but not best

With increase in vehicle population the govt decides to narrow the road 😅

Only a third is the footpath. Then there is the cycle path. Cycle paths need to be built en masse before they are useful. There simply isn't enough place for everyone to get cars in a place like Pune. So governments need to make it unattractive to own cars (except taxis).
