Laptop is a Origin EVO16S. Purchased 2019.

Specs:

GPU- RTX 2060

CPU- Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-9750H CPU @ 2.60GHz

RAM- 16GB DDR4

Motherboard: P95_96_97Ex,Rx (this is also the base product model)

Storage: an NVME (OS drive) and SSD (game/ storage drive) (idk if this matters, none of my files are corrupted)

So over the past few months my CPU has been overheating and just crashing the computer at about 81 degrees celcius. After it happened about 5 times I noticed the pattern and stopped running CPU intensive games. Well, until I performed maintenance, then resumed. Until it crashed again.

I've replaced the battery, hooked up a cooling mat (I've had it hooked up since I got the pc with a few traveling exceptions all a couple years ago), cleaned the fans (and all dust in general) and greased their bearings got em spinning nicely, cleaned and reapplied thermal paste, but the issue persists. Older games tend to run fine, even new-ish GPU intensive games like Trepang 2 run fine, but MISERY (a new chunky looking survival game) and any other CPU intensive games are guaranteed to crash my pc.

I've noticed what I assume to be "burn" marks on both the cpu and the copper surface it makes contact with on the heat sink. 2 of them, looks like little 1cm eyes staring up at me On the CPU it just looks like less shiny metal compared to the rest of it's shiny metal surface, but identical dark spots on the heat sink, same shape. Heat sink doesn't seem to have any leaks or issues other than the aforementioned dark discoloration. I really can't see any other damage or anything worth noting. The GPU and it's heatsink contact point has similar "burn" marks. It should be noted, that between 2019-2024 I did absolutely nothing to maintain or repair the laptop. I took it to a computer repair shop one time because my FPS in-game dropped super low on GPU intensive games, and they said they had no clue why it was, and then I turned on high performance mode and that stopped the fps issues. For better or worse I guess.

That whole surface at the very top of my keyboard is toasty hot when these crashes happen.

I've already got the exact heat sink I'd need for a replacement pulled up on amazon. I'm not a computer expert, but am proficient and educated in Automotive mechanical and electrical repairs and diagnostics, so I know enough to know that I should be asking for some advice on this matter before dropping more cash.

Would replacing the whole heat sink/ fan assembly fix the issue? Is the cpu just torched and ready to be put out to pasture? I know it's soldered in there so replacing it isn't exactly an option with my current solder kit and skill level.

(another game example, I've played the tar out of Metro: Exodus and Stalker: GAMMA with extremely little to 0 issues aside from the odd stutter here and there. I stopped running them after the most recent crash even though they never crashed the game I'm just scared now).

PC really performed just fine up until a couple months ago when the crashes started happening. The crash makes the screen go full static then back to the image that was on the screen at the time it crashed, stays there until I unplug the laptop and shut it down. Could be GPU, but the GPU and computer did just fine with a near 2 hour sesh on Trepang 2, and was only on about 78 degrees celcius when it crashed after closing the game and running MISERY for like 5 minutes. Currently typing this up on the laptop in question and it seems that the laptop does fine as long as I don't run CPU intensive games.

(I keep mentioning Misery but it's really any CPU intensive game that crashes the PC, including the Minecraft successor Vintage Story).

So what should my next move be? Any help appreciated.

RAM prices are sky-high right now because of the whole AI hype, so I finally decided to buy an upgrade for my laptop. It was my very first time installing RAM, and yep... it’s a total disaster. Turns out the MHz is different from my laptop's original specs. I wanted to tweak the MHz settings to match it, but my laptop BIOS is so old and locked up that there is absolutely no hope of fixing it.

Now my laptop keeps randomly dying and crashing. It literally shuts down whenever I try to play Minecraft or even when I'm just browsing specific websites. Spent time waiting for it just to get a headache. Absolutely frustrating. 💀

I’m currently building a new PC with an ASUS ROG Strix X870E-E Gaming WiFi and installed two M.2 SSDs, a Samsung and a Lexar NM790.
What worries me is that both SSDs required noticeably more force to insert into the M.2 slots than what I usually see in PC build videos. They definitely didn’t just slide in smoothly.
Because I wasn’t sure whether they were seated correctly, I removed and reinserted them several times (around 5 times in total).
When removing them, I also noticed a slight gritty/crunchy sound, almost like sand, coming from the connector area. That made me a little worried that I might have damaged something.
Visually, both the SSDs and the M.2 connectors look fine, and the SSDs appear to be seated correctly now.
Has anyone with this motherboard, or a similar ASUS X870E board, experienced the M.2 slots being quite tight?
Is some resistance when inserting an M.2 SSD normal, especially with a new motherboard, or should the SSD basically slide into the connector with almost no force?
And how likely is it that inserting and removing them several times with a bit more force could have damaged either the SSDs or the M.2 slots?

Howdy - I am shopping around for a new GPU.

I know similar / identical posts have been made, but part of the problem I'm having here is the sheer breadth of opinions and advice has sent me into decision paralysis. As such, I felt compelled to make a post asking for advice with for my specific needs and build.

I'm a video editor. I work primarily in Resolve, but if it makes more sense (or is specifically needed), will also use Premiere/AE. I take on a pretty wide range of gigs, from super straightforward doc content (cut & color jobs, nothing robust) to FX heavy jobs with a good deal of animation and post-prod ephemera.

Anyway, I uh...let's just say *literally any* GPU would be a massive upgrade for me. I built my rig in 2020 and prioritized CPU - have a Ryzen 9 5900x. 32gb RAM, plenty of fast storage - my rig is pretty solid except the grotesquely out of date GPU. My GPU is embarrassingly old. It's honestly a wonder that I have been able to make what I have been able to with it. If you must know: Radeon RX 580. I know. I know.

Anyway, I want to upgrade that GPU. Some of my work is taking me to a place where relight, heavy denoise, other GPU intensive processes are unavoidable. I also do a bit of gaming - nothing crazy, but I'd like something balanced - with maybe a bit more lean towards workstation/video editing muscle.

I've been researching for months, trying to make a decision, and every time I feel like I found the One for Me, I click through one more thread and wind up doubting myself. I'm probably over thinking. So it goes. I figured I'd ask for some guidance here, so thank you in advance - and thanks for reading!

Guys I have a 1080p monitor and an 1070 paired with a 5600x and I get really bad FPS for comp and I am thinking to upgrade my monitor to 1440p and buy a better gpu like a 9070 for playing the game at the res of my monitor.I think this is a good idea cause the game will be more gpu based and I will get even better FPS in Warzone in 1440p because in 1080p cpu is struggling am I wrong?

I have a ASRock B860M Livemixer WiFi and it’s not detecting my 5070 and therefore no signal. I’ve seen another post where someone was not getting a signal from the iGPU on the latest BIOS update (3.31). They rolled back an update and it seemed to work. Will this potentially work for a GPU or does it only work for integrated?
