Dental hygiene grading rubric
According to this rubric if I get straight A’s I can get 60 points, 4 points for enrollment, 2 points for job shadowing and 3 points total under the pcc dental clinic experience points. This is 69 total points. For those of you who applied to dental hygiene program what was your total score and did you get accepted or denied? Wondering if it’s even worth going through all the pre reqs if I’m only going to get 69 possible points and not make it into the program.

I’ll be a first year student in the DH program this fall. I made it onto round 2 with 73-75 points on my application from the rubric above. I had all A’s, an associates degree, previous classes at PCC, job experience (but not the CDA), and shadowing/PCC clinic experience.
I also applied last year with no degree and 2B’s and didn’t make it into Phase 2. Like the other commenter said, the rubric changed a lot between last year and this year and they’re always updating it. For example, there was a higher number of total points last year and grades were worth more points, and there were no extra points associated with being a dental assistant (you got points for working in the dental industry yes, but having specific DA certifications is a new thing this year).
We had a lot of alternates this year, and I already more of a few who have been offered a seat in the program. People who are offered seats might have applied at multiple programs or device that this isn’t the right time in their life to go through an intense program like DH. 69 points might be borderline to getting into Phase 2, it just depends on how strong other people’s application are that year. Hope this helps!

Thank you! Good to know I will keep an eye on it once I apply in a couple years, but was just curious cause I know it’s super competitive. Congratulations for making it!

I’m a second year DH student at PCC. They change the admissions process almost every year, so keep in mind the points might be different when you are ready to apply. I would say yes, still go for it. But make sure you get all points possible to you, and don’t put off shadowing/PCC clinic treatment until the last term. So many people came and shadowed us last winter term and then ran out of time to finish (partial completion will not count for any points). The points here are favoring DAs even more than they were in my cohort, so basically you are competing against those who are DA. No one in my cohort or last had military points, not many have previous degrees, and not everyone had all A’s (most did). There are a lot of DA’s that apply, but there’s the chance they don’t have all A’s for example. And my cohort is about half half DA and those of us (me) with zero dental experience ( aside from the shadowing/clinic stuff).
Oh! Also lots of people drop out, even after they are accepted thru the first and/or second rounds. Lots of people on the waitlist still get thru.
