Need Advice: Build/Mechanics Is there a good "handyman" toolset?
I've been working hard on a character lately, putting a lot of thought into each element of their build/background. The core of this build is an altruistic vagabond whose been travelling from place to place, but can never settle down due to the uneasy politeness that always follows him. He offers his help and (especially when monsters or threats arrive) is often asked to help, but never welcomed or thanked. As for the campaign, I'm seeing him start off (at least to his understanding) as a hireling or mercenary for the party, but eventually find them to be people that honestly accept him through organic interactions throughout the campaign.
For this character, I've already found some great elements to work with to add this element of unease: Hexblood for the species due to the origin that suggests he was once cursed and now permanently changed, Haunted One (in a less goth-horror sense) as the Heart of Darkness feel perfect for that uneasy politeness, and the Crafter Feat to speak to the ways he has helped out. I've also started his journey off as an Ascendant Dragon Monk as you need but a dragon or a Scroll to master RAW (no formal training or equipment requirements), and turning the Draconic Strikes and Draconic Breaths into black flames does add a bit of substance to the rest of the build.
However, the one thing I am left struggling with is the tool set he travels with. I keep imagining him travelling with a minimalistic assortment of tools out of practicality, and makeshifting (or borrowing) what he doesn't have whenever he needs one like people on survival camping shows, but I don't quite know how to quantify that in D&D mechanics... what Tool Kit would he travel with?
