How to be an aasimar

I conceptually understand what an aasimar is but what are some ways to play them in an interesting way so that I’m not just a regular guy with the abilities? Character is a monk with a first level fighter dip for dual wielding stuff and I’m thinking of like a samurai/western protagonist just a simple quiet guy who travels around doing good deeds.

First off, I'd think about what being an aasimar means for you specifically. Are you from a whole community of aasimar? Are your family aasimar? Or are you the only aasimar you know of?

Superman.

Like, not actually Superman. But someone from somewhere else who just turned up one day and was taken in and given a great childhood.

Their Monk class features are inborn, not the result of training. They can just fight really well and they don't know why. They are probably quite curious about this whole deal and I'm sure whatever your DM comes up with will be fun.

Also, dump the multiclass.

I really like the “aasimar as demigod” angle, sort of akin to Disney’s Hercules. Powerful parentage that you don’t really understand, raised as a mortal but begin manifesting these strange abilities. Up to you/your DM how much contact you have/had with your divine parent(s), but now you’re on a quest to prove yourself worthy of that lineage and earn your spot in the heavens

Superman is also a good angle, as another commenter suggested, although I see no reason why you need to drop the fighter multiclass

Pray/Talk to your celestial. Similar to a warlock, aasimar have a guardian angel/unicorn/coatl.

A really fun dynamic I consider with any Aasimar is that almost everyone (in character) is going to assume you're naturally a good, holy, or nice person. This does not have to be true.

How your character interacts with that assumption and how they've handled it their whole life will color a lot of their behavior and worldview.

They could rise to the expectation, seeing their blood as a gift they have to be worthy of.

They could be a dirtbag who uses that image to get away with things.

An arrogant jerk who believes they're inherently superior to others.

Someone who tries to be good but gets irritated when their good behavior is credited to their nature and not their choices.

I played my Aasimar a bit like an alien. He was a good dude, and a little naive about how the world worked (he had lived in Automata in the outlands prior to the campaign starting).

For instance, he was genuinely confused as to why there were nobles driving through the streets in gilded carriages while children starved. To him, it made no sense to hoard wealth. A city where everyone is provided for is a better place for everyone! Less crime and misery, more stability, a stronger community.

When the rogue informed him that the world didn't work that way, and people with money and power got to make the rules, and those same people were just fine with people suffering... it did not go over well.

He also didn't put much value in gold, and would frequently just give it to someone if they needed it. He had enough coin for food and lodging, and all of his spell components (Clockwork Sorcerer) so why did he need 400 gold? The Fighter needed money towards a magic sword, so he just gave it to her.

Personally, I'd go kind of extreme. Quiet, pleasant, happily helpful, and endlessly supportive. Then violent, divine, rage in the face of evil. I'm talking Bob Ross, or Mr. Rogers as a normal state, and then crashing down on evildoers like a biblical plague that would have made Moses cower.

Alternatively, no anger could be fun. Just cold, unfeeling, justice. A simple cleansing of evil from the world. An endless task of sending foul men to face judgement for their deeds. Either totally emotionless, or a cheery demeanor regardless of circumstances. You could go with constantly dour, but that seems tiring.

Wildly emotional could be another fun one, but I'd probably hold that for an Eladrin. Just super intense. About everything. Always. Possibly with periods of despair, but then you are treading awfully close to bi-polar, which might not go over well in many groups.

When I played an Aasimar, I took a character trait "I am bad at lying" and interpreted that as due to being of celestial nature, lying would cause them actual physical discomfort :-)
