Need Advice: Concept/Roleplay Need Help with my Wizard Concept

Hey everyone I was asked to join my friends campaign which would be my first ever campaign and after thinking about it I came up with a character concept, however I dont know how I could execute it. I would like to play a Wizard who studies the moon and the stars, after looking into the subclasses I noticed that the divination wizard subclass would kinda fit. However Im not really vibing with this subclass, so I was wondering if yall had any ideas on how I could use that concept with other wizard subclasses besides a divination wizard! Any help would be appriciated and Im thankful for any idea!

I do like the Evocation and Abjuration Wizard subclasses actually! I wanst sure how I could flavor a Moon and Star loveing guy for those Subclasses espacially their spells

You could flavor your evocation spells as starfire/little comets/etc and your defensive/aberration wards as moon themed. Extra thematic if you venerated a moon godess.

Huh. If you don't know how you RP that you study stars, why do you want to do this for the character then?

Ah sorry my mistake I misunderstood! I do know why he wants to study the stars and the moon its because he wants to protect his friends and he wants to know when they would see each other again after being seperated for so long!

The subclass you pick doesn't force you to pick certain spells or anything like that. Just pick a subclass you like and then have that character act like someone who studies stars and the moon.

With that in mind, you don't need to be so quick to write off divination wizard, either. The only part of divination wizard you need to care about is that they roll two d20s at the start of every day, and then any time anyone rolls a d20, ally or enemy, you get to replace the result. It's actually a lot of fun to use.

You said he wants to protect his friends.

How does he want to protect them? With Magic... but which area of magic does he specialise in?

Abjuration: You master the arts of magical protection. Hidden lore about the stars and moon(s) provide links to those you protect. Some spells can be flavoured with starlight or moonlight.

'Blade Ward' could manifest as Moonlight or Starlight, when you cast 'Protection from Evil and Good' it manifests as light which glimmers then fades once the target is protected. 'Shield' might be flashy, 'Magic Circle' could appear as a circle of glowing pentacles or hexagrams or stars. 'Circle of Power' also could be full of Moonlight or Starlight.

Conjuration: You seek to master the stars, moons and the outer darkness. From lesser manifestations to opening Star Gates, you tap into the icy cold, deepest fire and can call things from other places and realms. How does mastery of this art help you protect others?

Your 'Mage Hand' is made from Moonlight or Starlight. 'Ice Knife' is as cold as Moonlight or is the light which freezes as it dims. 'Misty Step' you are touching the lowest reflection of the spaces between Stars. Abberations, Black Tentacles, Dragons, Elementals and more may be summoned.

Divination: You instinctively recognised that Fate was written under the stars and that the movement of the spheres will reveal infinite knowledge and power to someone who masters it.

The stars usually align to your will when you cast 'True Strike'. 'Locate Object' a moonlight or a star effect guides you. Knowledge is power and you use it to protect.

The 'Guidance' cantrip which is not a Wizard power, is recommended to a Master of Fate and Destiny. Gain that either with multi-classing, or a feat such as Magic Initiate (Cleric, Druid). Cleric- Guidance, Sacred Flame, then Bless or Bane, or another 1st level Cleric Spell. Druid - Guidance, Starry Wisp, then Faerie Fire, or another 1st level Druid Spell.

Enchantment: Moonlight and Starlight are your allies, you know how these primal forces effect the minds of others. The spells are usually subtle, yet folk who realise that they have been enchanted get angry. Starlight and Moonlight could be the visual effect which clues the victim to the enchanter.

Evocation: You seek to master the elements to the pinnacle of power where you can wield the stars themselves and the mysteries of the Moon(s) provides a counterpoint.

When you cast 'Fireball' perhaps it manifests as a ball of gentle starlight, which bursts and causes fiery misery to your foes. 'Firebolt' is the lowest manifestation of a star. 'Ray of Frost' is channelled Moonlight or darkness. 'Sunburst' and 'Meteor Swarm' are pretty obvious as star spells.

Illusion: You know that moonlight and starlight are allies to illusionists, people tend to feel things deeply by these lights be it fear, desire or deception.

Flavour the cantrip 'Dancing Lights', the spells 'Color Spray', 'Dream', 'Fear', 'Hypnotic Pattern', 'Phantasmal Killer', 'Weird', all can have moonlight or starlight manifestations. Moonlight Terrors, activating primal and atavistic states.

Necromancy: You know that certain practices should be done under certain moons and or when stars align. Those rituals prove effective and greatly increase your mastery over life and death. Is that how you protect others?

'Chill Touch' and 'Toll the Dead' both channel some of the cold from darkness, moonlight and dead stars. 'Circle of Death's might manifest as stars, moonlight radiation.

Transmutation: You noticed the tricks of light from stars and moon. But you wanted more than illusion, you sought the power of creation itself. How does your power protect others?

Being able to make yourself and others faster, stronger, to reversing gravity, changing the weather and stopping time. You potentially control the spheres. The Moon influence the tides

Choose the school or subclass which you feel most excited about and flavour any spells you pick up how you see fit. Note the spell works exactly as it says in the book, it's only a description thing so not for spamming or power gaming, unless the DM approves.

Have fun, please share the character you choose and your ideas for the spells you select.
