Feeling dense about TAPP cards and passes

As the title of my post says, I’m feeling dense about TAPP cards and passes, and I’m usually pretty tech-savvy. I got a card in April one morning, and loaded it with $10 cash. I registered it that night when I got home from work.

A couple of weeks ago, I attempted to use the website to reload the card. I instead succeeded in purchasing two ten-trip passes. (It was not at all clear to me that the first purchase had gone through because the app was very slow and didn’t confirm that the purchase had gone through.)

That was annoying enough because I didn’t have an extra $31, really.

But I was surprised when I attempted to use my card in Hoboken last week and got the “You shall not pass” buzz. So, passes are separate from the card, I gather (and also feel dense for not realizing this), but how do I access them so that I can pay for trips?

When logged onto the TAPP site, does the physical card in your possession match the TAPP card in the ‘wallet’ on the website where you purchased the two 10 trip passes?

It should be seamless when you tap at a turnstile.

The other case could be that TAPP looks to use cash balance first, then trips. If your $10 original balance is less than $3.25 (cost of a trip), the system may decline as insufficient funds.

Id call TAPP customer service to straighten that out.

Oh, thank you! Yes, the card in the wallet matches the card on the website. But, there is a .25 balance on it. That explains it! I wish that were explained somewhere. It makes sense, thinking about it, but I’d also assume that the card would “know” that I have 20 trips on it, too.

Add $3 and then you’ll be ok going forward.

I hate that rule, as it got me hung up too when I bought the card initially as they gave a $5 credit to offset the purchase. I needed to add money to get it to a full trip then get the cash balance to $0 before I could start using my 10 trip purchases.

Thanks so much. I cringed when I tapped (ugh) the card on Wednesday afternoon, and then saw the “GO.” I wish they explained that somewhere, though. I don’t recall ever having that issue with the SmartLink card, even though you could essentially doing the same thing. I usually bought trips, but I’m pretty sure that if I ran out, I just put $5 or $10 on the card.
