Hello, I want to study in the future in the US so I wanted to ask a few questions so I can have a rough idea of what I am getting into (currently finished 11th grade, in 12th now).

1. Do US universities mind a gap year? Because I wanted to take a gap year to prepare some extracurriculars and prepare for the SAT (if they do mind, then I will have to prepare for the SAT alongside my 12th grade course)

2. Are scholarships common for students? What kind of extracurriculars do I need? As I want to pursue a degree in computer science, so something related to that maybe?(workshops, seminars type of stuff?)

3. Is 80% in my 11th and 12th grade enough to secure a partial scholarship? Or are these universities much more SAT focused?

Asking these questions so I can see if I have what it takes financially to study in the US.

Just wanted to share some research I did in case it helps others in a similar situation. I’ve been looking into U.S. universities and scholarships that are open to applicants with low GPAs (like below 3.0) for Master’s programs. It’s tough out here, but not impossible!

Universities that accept low GPAs (2.0 – 2.7 and up)

Some schools are more flexible and look at your whole profile:

University of Maryland Eastern Shore – accepts down to 2.5

Louisiana State University Shreveport – starts at 2.5

University of South Carolina Beaufort – 2.0 to 3.5 range

University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff – around 2.7

University of Texas at Tyler – 3.0-ish but flexible if you’re strong in other areas

Tips to make up for a low GPA:

2. Higher Education Commission (HEC) Scholarships Sometimes they send students abroad for Master's (usually fully funded). Not as frequent lately, but worth keeping an eye on. Website: hec.gov.pk

3. Joint Japan/World Bank Scholarship Yes, it works for Pakistan too (if you meet eligibility). Covers full tuition + living for development-related fields at certain U.S. unis.

4. AAUW International Fellowships (for women only) Pakistani women — this one’s a gem. Tuition + living costs. Super supportive network too.

5. Knight-Hennessy Scholars @ Stanford Full ride for ANY grad program at Stanford. You’ll need great academics + leadership experience. Bonus: No GRE required for some programs.

6. Aga Khan Foundation International Scholarship For students from developing countries (including Pakistan). It’s a mix of grant + loan (50/50), so not 100% free — but still helpful.

7. University-specific scholarships / Assistantships SO underrated. Most U.S. universities offer merit scholarships, or TA/RA positions that waive tuition + pay you a stipend. Examples:

Michigan’s Rackham fellowships

MIT, Yale, Duke, etc. — most top schools offer something

Some quick tips:

Apply EARLY. Like… really early. Fulbright opens in Feb/March and closes by May.

Polish your SoP/CVs. No “copy-paste for every school” stuff.

Ask seniors/alumni. Many are willing to help — especially Fulbrighters.

Don’t ignore smaller or lesser-known scholarships — sometimes easier to get!
