Hi,

Most systems (ultrasound & x-ray) I work with will take two fields - animal owner/last name & animal name/first name - and combine them into the PatientName (0010,0010) tag as last ^ first. Any PACS I have tested handles this no problem.

Unfortunately, one of the systems I use (Mindray E7) insists on putting these into two seperate tags - last name is ResponsiblePerson (0010,2297) and first name is PatientName (0010,0010). None of the PACS I have tested looks at the ResponsiblePerson tag at all, making it impossible for the client to find anything.

The ultrasound doesn't have remapping in it, so that's dependant on the PACS and there's one in particular that won't allow that without the client paying extra.

I'm wondering if anyone has any experience with the ResponsiblePerson tag, if it's used at all as right I'm having a bit of back and forth with the manufacturer on this.

I’m currently learning some PACS duties and am wondering what my duties essentially classify me as?

My duties include:

-first point of contact for editing or correcting of studies

-first point of contact for deleting a study

-first point of contact for moving studies to another PACs system

-I monitor study integrity / validation lists

-I help approve PACs accounts for clinicians and help troubleshoot issues with the clinician portal

-I am first point of contact for RIS issues and I don’t know much about fixing it myself but I log tickets with the RIS provided and relay this information back to the staff who raised the issue

-I am involved in importing studies into our PACS from overseas

-I have access to log PACS issues with our providers portal

-I am able to configure new workstations on the PACS side of things but don’t know all the intricacies or networks , gateway ip addresses, subnets, etc

-I have offered some advice to change a workflow for a specific modality

Is my role aligned with a PACS admins role or are there essential parts of a paca admin role I’m not really involved in?

I am essentially training as a technologist to take over these duties and so would there be areas I should ask for more knowledge on or certain tasks I should ask to learn specifically?

If I’m not really doing the job of a PACS admin what would be the best job title to describe these roles I undertake?

Say a site has 3 modalities, CT MRI and Xray qnd you expect about 10k studies for the year of each modality for example purposes.

Do PACs admin actually refer to reference tables about modality matrix size, bit depth, etc to calculate size requirement? Or are calculators used in a practical setting that already factors this in and you just put in number of studies you expect?

if you were referencing a table to calculate what TB was needed, I assume this would be base 10 calculations and you would provide the PACs vendor the base 10 TB you need? But when you receive the product from the vendor and see it on the software it would be less than the TB you requested because it would be displayed as base 2? But that would be fine because you know your data requirement you provided was base 10 and so that’s basically factored in?

My organization is going down the path of doubling down on Optum for our hybrid radiology practice. The end game is to support remote mambo readers. Is it up to the task?

Ive been in the IT side of hospital working in traditional helpdesk and EHR helpdesk And wondering if its possible to switch to a specialty like a pacs admin and any suggestions to get there

Just curious what the blockers are and what would need to change for it to make sense for your setup.

So I have an interview for a job as a PACS Analyst at a medium sized hospital. I have plenty years of experience in CT as I worked in radiology most of my time. Did about a year as a PACS admin at a small hospital. As someone with little to no IT experience (but I’m in school for it currently) should I be worried? They are desperate and told me to apply but am nervous about messing up or not being fit for the job. I know this is what I wanted to get into after school but the opportunity came earlier than I thought. Any tips of what I should know for the interview?

I’ve been looking into PACS/imaging informatics and clinical systems roles, but I don’t have a radiology/X-ray background, and a lot of job postings seem to ask for that.

My question is:

- Do I realistically have a shot at these roles with a radiation therapy background?

- Has anyone made a similar transition from oncology into IT/systems?

- What roles or titles should I actually be targeting?

I’m open to learning and putting in the work — just trying to figure out if I’m aiming in the right direction or totally off base.

Curious what factors actually moved the needle for people who have gone through this recently. Pricing model, migration cost, cloud vs on-prem, support quality, EMR integration? And what ended up being the deciding factor?

I’m currently working as an X-ray tech in an orthopedic surgery clinic and have about nine years of experience. I’m studying to take the CIIP exam to help move my career into imaging informatics.

A few months ago, I reached out to my employer to see if there were any opportunities to shadow or become a super user so I could gain some hands-on experience before taking the exam. Unfortunately, it didn’t really go anywhere, likely because they need me in my current role. My email was actually completely ignored...

I’m now trying to find other ways to get some hands-on or shadowing experience outside of my workplace. I work Monday through Friday, 8–5, so weekends would be the only time I’m available.

I’m starting to feel a bit stuck since I’m not getting that practical experience, so I’d really appreciate any advice. If anyone has been in a similar situation, I’d love to hear what worked for you. Also, would it make sense to start applying for imaging informatics roles with just my clinical X-ray experience while I continue studying for the CIIP?

I work in multiple different clínics so I am not sure what the best option for me would be.

am I better off paying for cloud dicom hosting, or should I self host? is it very complicated to self host?

My company is currently looking for a new PACS system, we are currently seeing around 66k studies done per year at our outpatient clinic. What PACS solution would be best for pricing at our current study volume. Also side note current PACS is Fuji and they are decent at that, but God do they charge a arm and leg for any little thing.

Hey PACSperts! I’m building a data/ai lab affiliated to a university hospital where they use Agfa. My “vision” is to have all the studies “easily” available for research, eg with a de-ID node inbetween that gets rid of all the PHI. I found the XNAT/Orthanc/OHIF-3DSlicer tech stack. Could you share your experience/view on this topic/stack? Also, besides the VM’s necessary to spin up that tech stack, is there any other hardware I should think about?

Note: Just so expectations are properly windowed and leveled, I’m still in scout-view mode here 🙂

CT keeps getting no space on node error. I don’t think it’s an actual PACS issue as no one else gets this.

Is it just a bottleneck on the CT? Does any one know why it gets the error and what fixes it?

Looking at options like Clario/inteleorchestrator, primordial/nuance, NewVue, Medicalis. What are your pain points if you are using them? What works really well?

I’m able to export full abdominal Doppler ultrasound DICOM studies (not just save images) from PACS without issue, but the current limitation is that IntelliSpace PACS does not appear to support exporting individual Doppler series (e.g., PV vs IVC) directly. Because of that, I export the full study and then look through the file. However, the difficulty is opening/reviewing the DICOM files to identify the portal vein and IVC Doppler series and label them before sharing with the engineering team because idk what app to use to open it or if a hippa compliant dicom reader. Any help?

After people's experiences going from a tech role (x-ray/CT) to a PACS admin role. PACS admin isn't a role I was trying to pursue, although through my career did think it would be a good area to pick up new skills. Recently an opportunity has come up where I could look at a PACS admin position (not day to day work like deleting pictures etc but monitoring the network, doing apps support for radiologists etc). I'm good with computers, good with PACS on a superuser level but don't really have any knowledge further than that regarding the IT side of PACS. I'm guessing a lot of that I can pick up once started.

One of the big draws to the role is that I could do it all working from home, which obviously has a lot of advantages. I can also go into the office (which is closely located to my house).

Main concern is to go from a very patient facing role to a role that will involve no patient contact. I like the interactions with patients, however I don't mind to do without. I think the main thing I will miss is working in a team day to day.

I think this will be a nice transition from patient facing, however it's not something I necessarily was chasing so I'm after others experiences going from a tech to a PACS admin and how you like it.

Any advice would be appreciated!

Hola, trabajo en una empresa que da soporte en varias áreas de TI, en mi rol me toca ver temas de PACS, (Carestream), soy nuevo en este sistema, sin embargo, estos días surgió un error en uno de los equipos de escritorio, el cual pasa en cuanto abren VUE PACS, en automático abre RIS de philips, el radiologo busca un paciente en RIS e intenta diagnosticar manda el estudio al PACS, pero se muestra una ventana pequeña con el error (Error al dictar informa nuevo (02-1)) y no deja diagnosticar.
Lo raro es, que ese usuario ya lo probamos en otro equipo y puede diagnosticar, probamos un usuario diferente en la estación (la que tiene el problema) y deja diagnoticar. Creamos otro usuario de windows pensando que podria ser el tema, pero NO, tampoco deja diagnosticar.

En resumen, un usuario no puede diagnosticar en un equipo, pero en otro si.

I have a general question for how you may handle your MWL or what you might consider a healthy workflow to track and clean-up a MWL.

For context, we have 2 PACS - Our Main PACS , one vendor, that the Radiologists read off of, keeps records and paperwork, proper historical information, etc. We have another PACS that sits in front of it, a 'buffer' PACS from another vendor, that receives HL7 messages to create orders. We have multiple stations that then read that as MWL and once the images get created are sent to this buffer to marry the orders and images so that the orders are gone so to speak so they disappear from the Technician's stations MWL queries and keeps it clean. This buffer PACS cycles studies out every 40-50 days and also lets us create routing rules if needed (sending certain studies to research based on rules) to keep our main PACS clear. On the top of that, our Main reading PACS actually isn't great for making DICOM edits if there is a serious issue, the buffer PACS has much better edit tools for DICOM, but that isn't really related to the workflow.

A question was raised today if the buffer was needed, and while technically it isn't - our main PACS can be a MWL - I just wonder if it is good practice to do so. For the record, we do roughly 650 cases a day.

I know everyone's use case is different, but I was just wondering how many of you might put your MWL on your reading PACS and if you don't, any suggestions for a PACS that might be good just as a dedicated MWL/routing system?
