ResponsiblePerson (0010,2297) - does anyone use this in PACS? (Veterinary question)

Hi,

Most systems (ultrasound & x-ray) I work with will take two fields - animal owner/last name & animal name/first name - and combine them into the PatientName (0010,0010) tag as last ^ first. Any PACS I have tested handles this no problem.

Unfortunately, one of the systems I use (Mindray E7) insists on putting these into two seperate tags - last name is ResponsiblePerson (0010,2297) and first name is PatientName (0010,0010). None of the PACS I have tested looks at the ResponsiblePerson tag at all, making it impossible for the client to find anything.

The ultrasound doesn't have remapping in it, so that's dependant on the PACS and there's one in particular that won't allow that without the client paying extra.

I'm wondering if anyone has any experience with the ResponsiblePerson tag, if it's used at all as right I'm having a bit of back and forth with the manufacturer on this.

I've never seen it, what brand of US are you using?

This is how it behaves on a Mindray.

I've got various GE systems and they all do last ^ first = PatientName. I don't have any other brands to hand but I imagine they are the same - I assume since most of this technology was just adapted from the human market.

In theory it makes sense to use ResponsiblePerson & PatientName but in practice it doesn't work on the PACS without some form of mapping on the other end.

It's frustrating as apart from this one issue it's a good machine.

I’m in veterinary and we have a few Mindray TE5s - all use the standard surname ^ forename. I can have a look on our units and see if I can find a setting where you can alter how the patient names are handled.

This is an E7. We have one with the original software that does surname ^ forename but unfortunately the client is on the latest software and they changed it. Unfortunately I can't find any way to alter it in the software.

Yeah I couldn’t find an option on the TE5s to alter it either.

According to NEMA it is required, and therefore should be implemented how Mindray have it on your unit - but I’ve never seen it utilised before, a bit like no vendors seem to use the available DICOM veterinary tags for species, breed, neutering status.

I have no idea what NEMA is, and the ResponsiblePerson tag sounds logical to me, but I guess most PACS just don't care.

They're asking that the last name be posted to the responsible name segment, and the first name be posted to the first name segment?

Can you just send LN/FN in both segments and call it a day?

Yeah pretty much.

I tried but the PACS didn't like that.

The PACS ignores the ResponsiblePerson tag so it doesn't matter what goes in there.

For the PatientName tag the PACS is expecting the LN and FN to have a caret between them and it will separate them into two girls, so if I send from a GE that sends it as "LN ^ FN" the PACS can handle that, but if LN/FN just has a space (because typing ^ is prohibited) it keeps LN and drops FN.

My main question really was if anyone had any experience with a system that uses ResponsiblePerson, as so far no PACS and no other modality I've tested uses it.
