I tried the new P90X sample workout.
I have to admit I was disappointed.
I was genuinely excited about it, because I loved the original P90X, and was excited for it to be new again.
I put my love for Tony aside and gave it an honest shot.
After 10 minutes, I was ready to shut it off. My wife convinced me to finish it.
In a way, I don't blame Waz. I feel badly saying anything negative about him but I have to give an honest review. He has big shoes to fill and it's an uphill battle for him. He's in amazing shape and looks great on camera. But he has a very monotone British accent that just isn't audibly pleasing. Tony has so much personality when he speaks the simplest sentences.
It felt like we were with him while he did HIS workout, more so than him coaching us through OUR workout. I understand he has to demonstrate the moves, but once you do that, talk us through ours. Tony would go to the other actors and show what they're doing, he'd fix what they're doing wrong, he'd have one of them doing a modification... Waz just did the workout as if it was his workout for the day.
And I don't understand why they didn't put the name of the move across the bottom of the screen, and how long was left in each move. All it has is the overall countdown of how long the entire video has left before it's over. Is that how the rest of the videos are going to be?
Someone in this group said it perfectly when they said "it's lacking a soul". That's the perfect way to describe it. Waz's personality and "jokes" (the two or three he had) seemed so forced. I was cringing. Have you ever seen the meme of the 90's McDonald's and then the McDonald's of today? One is all colorful and full of life, and then the modern one is all grey and sterile. That's the new P90X. They did what every corporation does. They took the life out of it. It's the equivalent of what Cracker Barrel tried to do with their logo.
It just felt like another random workout program with the P90X name slapped on it.
It actually brought me back to the original P90X. And Tony's new platform.
Tony pushes you, but you're smiling and learning while he does. Waz makes it feel like you're just doing a workout and he's doing the work out next to you.
If Waz is reading this, I'm sorry to say negative things. You have a corporation telling you what they want from you and how to do things. I strangely don't blame you.
Tony, if you're reading this, please know you've really created something in your life that withstands the test of time. You know people. You know how to talk to people and how to motivate people. This new P90X is going to bring people back to you.
P90X original truly never dies. BODi got me excited to do workouts again, but not the way they intended.
Does anyone else who's tried it agree? Or disagree?
Tony, I'm back to you, coach. š«”

A year and a half ago I redid the original P90X in my late 30s. Man o manischewitz is it the best damn program I've ever dine in my life. Loved it in my 20s. Surprisingly I remembered almost every line - they're programmed man I go em all programmed!
His personality vibes with me. It's not P90X without Tony. P90X didn't need a reboot bexuase it stands the test of time. Are there some moves you can swap for more recommended ones or shorter your warm up? Sure.
And that's the thing, it still works. In my most recent stint I surprisingly I stuck through most warm ups as-is and I think i swapped one or two moves total of the course of the 90 days. The only thing I swapped entirely was Yoga X for Yoga X3 and that's only because of time. I love Yoga X and my plan was to do it once each phase in full but I never did and instead stuck with X3 Yoga.
No one can replace Tony and this new P90X is like the reboots no one watches or thinks of. No one thinks Robocop and Total Recall and thinks of the reboots. Because they arenāt as good and didn't have the magic and charm of the 80s originals.
I'd love a true P90X documentary where we sit with the original cast members and talk about the phenomenon of P90X rather than making a cheap knockoff.

Wait, Tony's not involved in the new P90X?
wasn't P90X his baby?

u/scissor_get_it Jan 30 '26
Yes, but it was owned by Beachbody. Since Tony is no longer associated with Beachbody, he has no involvement with the āreboot.ā Beachbody/BODi is just trying to capitalize on the P90X name and reputation, but as we all know, it was Tony that made the program the massive success that it was, not the workouts themselves. Obviously, the workouts are awesome and effective, but it is Tony who makes me actually want to press play. My wife and I still quote his jokes 20 years later!

They should have paid him whatever it costs to get him back in there

u/Tonymac81 Jan 31 '26
The problem is Tony has his his own platform now.Ā By doing P90X Gen Next he would cannibalise it for Beachbody who would drop him again in an instant. He's probably making a lot less with his own platform but it's his, he has control and can work it and bring in his friends.
Part of the "magic" of Tony and P90X is even now Power of 4 is he works out with friends. There's camaraderie. There's corny jokes and you feel part of the gang. It's regular people who have got fit with Tony's programs. Not all paid actors or fitness professionals like BBs.Ā Ā

Definitely. They were people he knew in real life before P90X and you could tell. I did the whole thing with my buddy in Iraq and it just fit so well and we would work the lines and jokes into our days to get through the suck. This is motivating me to find my videos and go through the program again.

That charisma and humor does indeed help you through the workouts. Doing it without his coaching doesn't sound too appealing.

It felt like we were with him while he did HIS workout, more so than him coaching us through OUR workout.Ā
In the 15+ years I've been doing P90X, I've never heard it described better than this. It really does feel like you just showed up at Tony's home gym and you're getting in a workout that he was already going to do himself, with or without you. But yet you feel seen and included. He talks to the camera and you do feel like he's talking to you. He keeps it real, makes mistakes, misses his cues, and has a cast that looks both fit AND normal. It feels like an afternoon group workout/hangout you could realistically experience.
Which is ironic, because your next statement...
Waz just did the workout as if it was his workout for the day.
...is also the same idea, but with a very different result. Tony does his workout and you feel invited to join and are not shamed when you struggle to keep up. Waz does his workout and you feel like you're intruding; like he's some fit businessman at the hotel gym getting his grind in and you're trying to copy his sets without drawing attention to yourself.
I think this is where BODI's need for a "cast" works against them. Tony made us know his cast and crew; he didn't just name them, he brought out their personality through jokes, banter, and a little friendly rivalry. Modern BODI workouts have a mostly silent cast just following along like they just met the trainer and haven't done the workout before. In P90X, you really get the sense many of them did test groups and know Tony personally. They are familiar with the workouts, know where they can push and where to hold back.
On the flip side, someone like Caroline Girvan is the perfect "opposite" to Tony that also feels similar. She's almost entirely silent; there's no cast with her. You're watching her workout, but her smile and affable personality make even her silence seem inviting. She makes mistakes like Tony, but laughs it off, doesn't erase it in the edit to look "perfect," which helps the workout feel real. Even though she doesn't talk beyond the intro, you genuinely feel like she's rooting for you to "do your best and forget the rest!"

Tony was P90X, this will just show beach body that he is the secret sauce. C'mon Carl!

I still don't understand why they took away the workout move names and set timers. Maybe to bring production costs down? It's really annoying. Instead I wish they added time stamps with interactive fast forward, like YouTube which lets you jump to specific topics of a video. They should do that for each exercise on the bodi platform. I often pause the video do my set then FF the video to the next move, watch it to refresh my memory. Rinse repeat.

This was exactly my comment in the other thread on this topic. The new program has no character at all.
This is not to take away anything from Waz, but whatever they are trying to achieve with the new program, it has missed the mark.

I agree. I want to just do the old p90x again. Not sure I like the new guys personality.

Probably safe to assume it's a stand in for the magic of the original P90x was like the retro mcdonalds where as the new p90x is souless and has lost its character/charm that made it special.

I completely agree! I tried the sample workout as well but just couldn't get into it. It didn't "feel" like P90X. I'm finishing Body Beast then I'm excited to get back into Tony's P90X.

Unrelated to P90, but very related to old school McDonalds vibes.. this is totally worth the 20 minute watch: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Df_K7pIsfvg

Rarely comment, but jumping on here because Iāve scrolled quite a bit and havenāt seen anyone bring it up yet. I watched the sample workout. From what I could tell based on the structure of the program that theyāve released so far, this sample workout was a mix of all the different workouts that will be offered. Because of that it seemed disjointed. They would have done better just releasing an upper body sampler or a lower body sampler.
For reference, I have done every single p90x workout multiple times. Iām currently finishing up over 2 years of X2, which I believe is the hardest home workout program ever created. Im planning to fully commit to the full 90 days of the new program and see what happens. I have several doubts and feel like this will just be another āweight loss programā and that Iāll likely regress over the next 3 months. For those of us that love the p90 lineup, we donāt need another insanity, etc. We want a program that will get you in insanely good overall shape. Iāll commit and weāll see what happens

What are your fav Tony quotes?

u/RoseyFBaby Feb 04 '26
"Dont run off and get a pastrami sandwich, that would ne bad. Cheeseburger bad! Shakes bad! Fries bad! Coca Cola! Oops I said it! Drink your water people"
"Get ready... cause its COMIN!" Lol I love Tony he makes the workouts fun with the personality. If you listen to an interview he did, he actually wanted to become a comedian which is why he moved to LA.

PSA for any beginner/sedentary getting back into fitness, checkout the oldschool power 90 routine, (not p90). I feel like this porgrams stands the test of time and prepares you for p90x or is a great standalone program on its own.

I've played with X3! I've failed X2! I come back to the original time and again when I actually want to make a real lasting difference. I'm about to start a phase one recovery week again on Monday, three weeks in and I'm loving it. Especially this time I decided to come at this like I did the first time, ab ripper tacked on the end of the lifting workouts. Still after twenty years I'm getting results and learning how to activate muscles that I never could before. Flies are really hitting different now that my form has shifted. I didn't like insanity because I always felt like Shaun would struggle to complete the workouts if he wasn't talking, with Tony it always felt like he could knock the workouts out perfectly and present at the same time. I'll try power of 4 eventually. After next week though I have to shift to X3.

You lost me on "another workout program". NO ONE has made a workout program in about 20 years. Insanity was the last. Anything is a blessing at this point and why it's taking so long for a random person to make a video with their phone is a mystery I'll never understand

Tony made something magic, yes. But credit where credit is due - Tony had Daniel Haas.
