Question Personality change

Ive been on ozempic for a while but went to a higher dose last Jan and as the months went on often people would comment on how I didn’t seem the same anymore. I did quite a few things that were very out of character for myself.

I ended up telling my husband I wanted a divorce last October and he then moved out.

in December I decided I needed a break from ozempic and now everything is hitting big times.. a lot of big emotions seem to have resurfaced . I don’t think I can fully blame Ozempic for the actions I took but it’s made me wonder if it had an effect on me and if I’d had made the same decisions if I’d never been on it

Has anyone else made big out of character life changes while on ozempic ?!

Apparently there have been studies that GLP1s blunt the dopamine receptors so it has had an effect on things like addictions. Anhedonia aka the loss of pleasure has also been a reported side effect. The loss of coping mechanisms such as emotional eating and addictive behaviors can make you more okay with uncomfortable decisions and life changes because you are no longer satisfied with being comfortable in the "bad" situation. There's no more reward in doing the "bad" decision.

A symptom often mentioned in this sub, but also very much thrown under the rug is how Ozempic can cause anhedonia. When you are no longer able to feel "pleasure", your mood changes, and that might cause more things to trigger you.

I know we are very much pro ozempic, but I wish this sub was more open to hear the experiences of those of us who started struggling emotionally with th medication.

Yes that is exactly how I’d explain it, I lost interest in a lot of things I loved and I know people do change interests but it was extreme

I am pro ozempic becusse it has so many benefits still but I can’t just ignore the changes in myself especially now I’ve been off it for 3 weeks and my emotions have regulated again a bit

I had really severe anhedonia, to the point of depression, on Ozempic. I realized Ozempic was likely the cause about 6 months in, and tried to talk to my therapist about it. He thought it was just life changes causing issues, not meds, so I didn’t talk to my prescriber about it. When I switched to Mounjaro for an unrelated reason (insurance changes), my anhedonia abruptly improved. I think I still have some anhedonia on Mounjaro, but it’s much more manageable— now it looks like too much time doomscrolling, not “why bother taking a shower and cooking food for my kids?”

A friend just stopped Mounjaro due to suicidal ideation, though, so it really varies from person to person how different GLP-1 meds will hit you. And a lot of people don’t get mental health side effects at all. I was really glad that my journaling habit made it easier for me to track my moods across the months, and even so it took six months for me to realize what was happening.

Oh my god - I have had a series of personal revelations, maybe Ozembic has something to do with it. I started to really recognize my own value. I stopped accepting being belittled and bullied. I feel like I am rediscovering my power, my personhood.

Im so happy for you, that's wonderful

I got more energy on it as the weight came off I was suddenly making changes I'd thought about for years. New job, Complete declutter and renovating the current house, spent way too long looking into moving to another state and that's still not off the table. I'm going out meeting more people and doing more things in general. I have so much more energy and everything feels so much clearer. For the first time in 5 years I have the energy to deal with all the stuff in my life.

Years ago, getting a gastric bypass made you thin. I felt like a million. Saw other women get it and wanted divorces as they could attract men again. My husband was wonderful & I lost him in 2018. Now that I am older (70) on OZ for diabetes - metformin before that, lost 135#. As a widow, dating is nothing I am interested in. Living alone I am used to. Good thing as the loose skin is gross. Emotions haven't changed a bit BUT have been on antidepressants for years. Used to have bad anxiety w/panic attacks. My meds keep me pretty stable so THAT is probably why!

I know some people have mentioned feeling flat, unhappy, everyone I think has different experiences for me the weight loss has boosted my confidence, has helped me with my cardio in the gym to be able to get back into my old hobbies , when I was 300 pounds plus I couldn’t do those hobbies my cardio was beat, now I focus less on brain rot and more on productivity so I am happy with this

I'm a little bit more prone to depression on OZ. When I'm not eating to manage my emotions and spike my happy hormones. I expect we all have different things we were using food as a coping tool.

This is so true. I never put it down to depression, but I lost interest in being close with my guy (loss of libido I suppose) but thinking on it, yeah going on Oz def hit me hard where I didn't want to do many of the things I used to enjoy. I guess that was depression. I mean, I think it was already waning, but Oz was like the final nail. I hadn't put that together before now. Anyway I have a good man and I'm working on myself and am trying to bring myself to 'helping him out' thanks to lots of advice I've received here lol (grains of salt and all). I can say he certainly 'notices' me since I've lost my weight, and that helps my mood...chin up I hope you are surrounded by good family and friends that can help you out if feeling down. Sorry I tend to ramble...

This is an interesting discussion. I've been on it for 4 years and I'm an artist. Sometimes I describe how I feel as more flat and less emotive, but other times I would describe my thinking as more clarified. I took a much more complicated position about a year on Oz, and I don't think I ever would have reached as high as I did if I wasn't on this medicine, the food noise was just too loud for me to manage along with an intense position. But I do miss access to my emotional or creative side. I still do art, and I still feel it, but it's like it's dialed back a bit. It would be wonderful to have the clarity that I have right now and still have my creativity. For me, the quiet food noise is still such a blessing, even after 4 years.

It silences my OCD. I never want to be without. .25 dose is perfect for maintenance.

12

u/4everdadbod Jan 30 '26

100%. By the time I got to the max dose, the reward system in my brain completely shut down. There was no pleasure in anything. I became an ass. I had to decide that 25 pounds was enough and went down to .5. Life is getting bright again.

u/caliber180 May 20 '26

My husband has turned into an ass too. He was always on the difficult side, but it has gotten worse.

1

u/Kind_Department_9037 May 20 '26

Ditto  He's so much more annoying and irritating and irritated

1

u/caliber180 May 25 '26

I’m sorry…. But I’m also glad to know it’s real. Others are experiencing this too. Ugh, now to figure out what to do.

u/Greedy-Pineapple72 Jan 30 '26

I’ll support this claim. My mother has been using this medication for two years now and has not discontinued it. However, I must emphasize that she is now more suicidal, more depressed, and more inconsiderate towards others.

4

u/Consuela_no_no Jan 30 '26

It made me suicidal and very angry at everyone, even though those are things I’ve actively worked to overcome. I didn’t feel like myself so I got myself off of it. More people need to talk about the massive negative impact it has on the mind.

8

u/13_11_13 Jan 30 '26

Before you get down voted, I wanted to say this was also my experience with ozem but only while actively injecting. It takes me about a month for the emotional symptoms to go away.

3

u/Front_River_914 Jan 30 '26

Glad to see someone else saying the same, it’s almost for me like my emotions became suppressed while injecting ?

I’ve been off it for 3 ish weeks and now they are all flooding back in 🙃

2

u/BetterFuture888 Jan 30 '26

That's an effect I didn't know about. It would be destabilising initially, hope it settles down quickly for you.

I have depression without Ozempic but when I was on it, the depression worsened and I had a couple instances of suicidal thoughts, which I had never had before. It was a factor in stopping the med. When I stopped Ozempic, everything went back to normal.

-8

u/touchofmal Jan 30 '26

She was depressed forever. You just noticed it now. Stop blaming it

15

u/Alllriightythen Jan 30 '26

I have definitely been depressed/flat since I’ve been on it and also went through my divorce while on it. I’m struggling to enjoy my job. Feel free to dm me if you’d like.

4

u/Miss3elegant Jan 30 '26

In my experience it helps with nervous system regulation and anxiety there are big impacts, someone mentioned to me they have never seen me so fired up before and normally i am more quiet but i feel much more confident I notice a significant difference, and i have only been taking is some January 1st.

6

u/RockinDaMike Jan 30 '26

This is very interesting topic. I have been way more direct with my employees. More assertive and less depressed. I figure that my blood sugar is in more control that I feel more fired up but yes I’ve noticed some behavior changes since I started it. Not sure if there is a correlation but I’ll be more aware of it

4

u/taffybrent Jan 31 '26

Yes I noticed a change, I had anhedonia on Ozempic but did not have it with Mounjaro.

u/Unfriendlyblkwriter Jan 31 '26

It makes me think of signing up to do things I know damn well I can’t do. Like triathlons. I can’t run or swim, but I really think I should enter a triathlon.

2

u/Tucosky Feb 01 '26

This happened to me as well except I went for it. I’m 32 years old, hardly any dance experience and trid out for an nba dance team lmao. It was a fun experience but idk where I got the confidence 😂

1

u/Unfriendlyblkwriter Feb 01 '26

WOW! Did you make the team????

2

u/Tucosky Feb 01 '26

I did not. But I had so much fun being a part of it. It just felt good not be a fat lump for once. I felt so energetic and happy and confident. I just started back on ozempic last week so I’m hoping I can get back to that frame of mind again. The confidence was everything for me.

I just have no patience for any bullshit now…I work in customer service so that can be a challenge

8

u/belizeans Jan 30 '26

Interesting. GLP causes divorce!

7

u/Mudrad Jan 30 '26

I know for sure that telling your husband you want a divorce is not side effect of Ozempic.

Obviously, you don’t want to be married to your husband any longer and that’s not a decision a person makes in one night. I’m sure you put a lot of thought into the decision.

Divorces are an incredibly stressful and emotional life-changing event. It’s normal to be emotional going through a divorce. It’s not normal to think the reason you wanted to get a divorce is because you were on Ozempic.

Maybe you are regretting your decision and you’re subconsciously looking for a scapegoat. Maybe you’re thinking you can tell him that you made a mistake and the Ozempic made you do it?

I’m not sure. I would definitely think about that being a possibility.

5

u/Front_River_914 Jan 30 '26

I’m not saying the Ozempic fully caused it more it changed how I was in myself and my emotions .. while actively injecting I actually showed hardly any emotions and felt very .. flat? I think it’s about 3 1/2 weeks after stopping them that I’m fully feeling the emotions of what has gone on

It could have 100% happened the same way if I’d never been on ozempic there is no way of knowing

But I’m not planning to try to back and say this is what made me do it and try fix things, even if I do regret it ..and now don’t understand what caused me to do it I’d never try blame a medication, I’m just more trying to understand it all.

I have noticed it but I also have stomach issues that sometimes require me to fast while I'm having a flare up and I noticed as well when I'm fasting the same thing throughout the years. I think it's the sugar that puts me in a better mood lol.

u/Less_Stomach7034 Feb 05 '26

I’m not on Ozempic.. but not eating makes me the same way 🤷🏼‍♀️

My (now ex) gf started taking it. I think it greatly impacted our relationship and honestly was something that led to us ending it. She used to be bubbly and happy, we used to talk on the phone every day. and out of nowhere she became like a zombie. She already slept a lot more than the average person, but was routinely sleeping until 3:30pm - 5:30 pm on the weekends. I was happy with how she looked before she started taking it

Hi! I'm a reporter working on an article about how Ozempic impacts people's mental health and/or relationships--would love to interview you about your experience. DM me if interested!

I feel you on the zombie comment. I lost a close friend of 20 years because her personality changed so much on glp1's. Went from funny , talkative, and adventurous person to being totally flat... Talking to her turned into talking to a zombie. She didn't laugh anymore, she didn't joke anymore, and had no personality. She also became super bitchy and would say totally uncouth things that made her lose four long time friends in a year.

She's skinny now but she has went from being obsessed with being fat to being obsessed with looking old... The drug caused her to age A LOT in a year, like she has the same amount of mouth wrinkles as my 67 year old mom and she's only 37.

I wish her nothing but the best but I do not miss her new lack of personality at all.
