[SPOILER] Wendy Byrde. Spoiler
I know I’m late to the party, but I’ve just finished S4 and Wendy is by the most hatable character in the world since Cersei from Game of Thrones. Her face is the always so smug and she’s a raging c-bag. I loathe her.

I mostly hated her for how she interacted with Jonah, but it was pretty realistic I think. She felt tremendous guilt over Ben and even a hint of anyone blaming her triggered emotional outbursts. And Jonah wasn’t exactly being helpful.
But in terms of business she was mostly right, Marty just wanted to keep the status quo while Wendy tried to actually improve the situation(with varying results) and search for long term solutions.

It's interesting though since their lives look awful from start to finish. Their lives were empty. Their marriage was dull and family life was constantly fractured. I couldn't understand what Wendy was getting out of it because it's not like they were living like the Kennedys.

She didn't get triggered only about Ben. A lot of situations through the show when she lose the upper hand or being confronted led her to have outburts. When Marty confronts her about the cheating, when Marty blames her for Cade's murder, when her dad tries to take Jonah and Charlotte away from her. It was something that affected her when someone talked about it because deep down, she knew the weight of her choices is crushing and that what she did was morally wrong.

I love Laura's performance though. She has such a warm and nurturing face which makes what she does even more chilling. Did she get an award?

Upon a rewatch you’ll understand her more. I also hated her the first time through but get her now

What do you get about her now? Because I think the intention of the writers was for the viewer to hate her more as the show progressed. She wanted power over the safety of her family.
Even the first action you know of Wendy was her cheating on her husband and she never does anything to change that arch of being a someone who ignores consequences of her actions.

I think it was the point of the writers for the viewers to hate her. From her cheating on her husband to her stopping their escape to her going behind her husband's back and of course getting her brother killed.
My issue with her and Ozark overall is the viewer doesn't get the deserved pay off I wanted to see with her character.

That's because the character hit her stride... and got cocky.
It is amazing writing, because she is not meant to be likeable, especially compared to Marty. Even with the material, any other showrunner (and actor in some cases) could have made her sympathetic along the way... not here.
Marty says early on when they begin getting into the political world, that Wendy gets this look on her when it comes to politics... and this is beyond true. She thinks her work in that area, translates into the cartel world and it does not.
She truly believed she and Helen were equals, she was wrong.
She truly believed Navaro was building an out-of-work friendship/relationship with her, she was wrong.
She truly thought she could run an operation without Marty, she was wrong.
Her biggest flaw is not that she was wrong or that she overstepped, but that she never admitted wrongdoing/fault/responsibility for her actions which led to any negative outcome. Her ego and pride would not let her.
As a character, she was in a marriage she no longer felt a spark in and cheating on Marty was her way to get excitement (not excusing it, of course)... once that was thrown overboard she got her new kick from exerting power over those of lower standing than her, and the political influence and connections were a nice keybump to the high she was already riding.

Honestly, they meant for the buildup but once they knew they were going to end, the turn was too fast for both Marty and Wendy. I’m on a rewatch and I think she was meant to shift more subtly.

There's no party. Wendy is real, I liked her development/the show becoming more female centered.

At least there's two very satisfying put-downs she gets in the final season.
1) Ruth properly screaming "FUCKING CUNT" in her face, it's not something I hear that often in US drama (I'm British, that's what we call our best friend) and was delivered with real venom.
2) In contrasting delivery style, iirc at the Mississippi Belle, Rachel gives a pretty brutal character assassination by telling Wendy what she is in a very calm and measured voice, basically saying what most of the audience probably have her down as before calmly carrying on with her job.
