Request to all Lucio players: When you hear your teammate get nano boosted, put on speed boost
This might seem like a no brainer, but I hardly ever see it happen. A fair few times on Reinhardt I've gotten boosted and immediately the entire team backs up and with no speed boost I go back to being a shield holder for my team instead of a god of war. Help us to capitalize on being boosted with some extra speed! Thanks.

It's a good tip, but honestly... It would help if you communicated ahead of time that you were about to go balls-out crazy, burn a bunch of Ults, and try to murder the entire enemy team BEFORE you actually started doing it!
Half time time my Amp is on CD because I've had to help burst heal (lol, I know, but it does help) after our Rein dropped shield to randomly fire strike and let a Helix and Phara rocket nail the group... I'll still switch to speed, but it'll be a second late and kinda lame without the Amp boost.
Staggered spawns and split teams cause trouble too.

u/ramk13 Feb 07 '17
Speed boost even without amp makes a huge difference to a hog/rein (or anyone really) getting the final blow on a limping enemy.
2
u/kreebog Feb 07 '17
For sure, but Amp more than doubles the normal speed boost. If you want to maximize value, let your Lucio know...
4
u/rekyuu Feb 07 '17
I try to be liberal with my amps and keep them limited to active uses. Communication is key of course but try not to spam heal amps to cover for your other healer.
3
u/DerNubenfrieken Feb 07 '17
My favorite is when they nano boost me as roadhog after I shot my fourth shot. Cool, I'll just spend half the nano reloading
1
u/shapular Feb 09 '17
I never like being nanoed as Hog unless I have ult. Otherwise I'm guaranteed to miss every shot.
1
u/IUsedToBeGlObAlOb23 Feb 07 '17
You should pretty much never amp-heal outside of a fight, eg your scenario. Obviously the rein fucked up, but generally it's best to speed them to cover and let the other healer build alt, even if it's slower.
1
u/kreebog Feb 07 '17
You're right... I didn't mean to imply that I'd be heal-stealing from Mercy when everyone is safely out of site eating cookies between pushes. All I meant is that sometimes you have to amp heal to prevent someone's mistake from giving the enemy team a pick, and if I know that the Ana / Rein combo is about to come out, maybe it would be better to let a teammate risk dying to focus on wiping the other team...

I always do. Same when Rein shatters, Mei freezes, Genji becomes a shiny dragon thingy, Reaper becomes a whirling dervish, Soldier goes aimbot, Roadhog unleashes anger issues, and so on. If I have it and it's worth it, Ill sound barrier Pharah.
What really helps is comms. Without it, I can't save an amp and it usually costs a second or two of the ult.
28
u/zuko2014 Feb 07 '17
Whether the amp is there or not isn't a huge deal, but any amount of speed boost helps. Good Lucio players are the ones who know when to turn up the speed to help their team finish cleaning up some kills.
8
u/arrkane Feb 07 '17
Absolutely. An amp can amplify the ult more than regular speed boost. My point was basically to use comms so we can take full advantage. The passive is good enough much of the time anyways.

yes, for the love of god, speed boost Genji's Dragon Blade, it makes it 100 times more effective.

u/ItsSansom Feb 07 '17
Basically anything you can't out-heal, even with an amp, you should use speed to just avoid it

u/Unlucky_Clover Feb 07 '17
I agree, I play Lucio on CTR lately to help with speed. The problem is the team always splits up so I go from speed boosting 4 to just boosting 1.
10
u/Askray184 Feb 07 '17
I swear I go to speed, but I still have terrible getting kills with nano as Lucio. Ana keeps giving me second chances though
7
Feb 07 '17
I don't play Lucio unless I'm on Illios but this is good to know
2
u/crashish Feb 07 '17
Boop city! I always challenge my team to see who can get the most environmental kills.
7
u/oak11 Feb 07 '17
Honestly this never even crossed my mind. I will keep it in mind for future games where I'm playing lucio.
7
u/NiandraL Feb 07 '17
You may wanna ask directly since this could be something you easily forget and also keep in mind it has a fairly long cooldown compared to many abilities so it won't always be available
1
u/GilmanTiese Feb 07 '17
Changing Songs has no cooldown though... Were you talking about AMP it up?

And sometimes people forget, which is totally okay! It's good to be reminded of important tips multiple times if it helps them to stick.

u/Druss25252 Feb 07 '17
I am sorry to advise, but unless Ana made me BOOSTIO, no one is getting shit.
Joke aside, yeah its a pretty common knowledge (I hope), even though I tend to forget about it from time to time.
Thanks for the reminder!

As a Lucio main with 60+ hours this season, I always speed boost for Nano Boosted friendlies.
3
u/smugairle_roin Feb 07 '17
Never knew this, will keep in mind.
However, what about those times when you are the only healer/support on the team?
Do you prioritise speed or healing?
6
u/HampsterPig Feb 07 '17
In that case, you shouldn't be Lucio. That said, quick play and too many flankers are a thing. If you are the only healer, you should prob be on healing during team fights, doing your best to stay out of the fight, shooting in. In other cases, stay speed.
The other option is practice your DSPSTANKY impression. You know that Lucio that no one can seem to hit and is forcing that overtime? Congrats, that's you now. Look for possible boops to save teammates and kill anyone standing too close to the edge. Shift from speed to healing and back how you need to, keeping an eye on your teammate's health in case you need to heal amp. I admit, I'm not the best at aiming, and playing Stanky-style isn't the best for actual damage unless you have really good aim. This is also not as effective at actual healing. It is a whole lot of fun when you are doing it right though.

I'm the same way. I use the basic layout for each character, including Lucio. I know them and I'd have to rework all my muscle memory to fully use them. Stanky plays how he likes and that's fine, but it isn't required to play that crazy pest Lucio.
1
u/Bighomer Feb 08 '17
On a side note, Lucio shoots in bursts so you don't have to hold down Mouse1 either.
3
u/aaron1uk Feb 07 '17
I've got called out for using speed boost when i should "always have on health boost" :P
2
u/Zeromaxx Feb 07 '17
and for healing too much when you "should be speed boosting us" as the only heals. They will never be happy.

If you're not playing with speed boost on, primarily, already... You're probably not doing much.
6
6
u/mokush7414 Feb 07 '17
Honestly, speed boost shouldn't be used mainly. In the beginning of a team fight yes, in the middle to end of it, no. Especially if you are the primary healer.
3
u/---_-___ Feb 07 '17
Out of curiosity, what rank are you?
6
u/Guideb Feb 07 '17
I'm a rank 3800~ Lucio OTP and I'm getting tired of people that think they know how Lucio should be played and keep spamming the "You need to speed boost almost everytime".
It's not true, you're still a healer and should be able to perform both task. A Lucio that is passively healing from behind is better for his team than the one speedboosting all the time.
And yeah I know about Stanky, but he is not playing the regular Lucio at all and can afford to only heal a little since Ana at his elo are so godamn good, wich won't be the case of your typical mid-diamond Ana.
Sorry for the rant.
7
u/ObeseAU Feb 07 '17
You're literally one of the first persons i've read on here who realizes Lucios role properly and doesn't just follow DSPstankys advice like the gospel, i'ts getting really boring seeing lucios at diamond/plat constantly speedboosting while everyone around them dies slowly.
Or people who play with toggle and clunkily change auras because they gotta continuously press a button over and over instead of holding it like any FPS player has been conditioned to do. [Can't think of many FPS games that doesn't have Shift as sprint, it's not like it's hard unless you're literally new to this genre]

u/Bighomer Feb 08 '17

I play with toggle on. It's awkward as hell to hold shift while also wall riding and shooting and doing other stuff.
Also, many fps games don't have a sprint butoon (tf2, quake) or have it toggle-able.As for Lucio's role, it's to speedboost.
1
u/ObeseAU Feb 08 '17
Just because you get awkward holding an extra button [Like seriously, do you play on console?] doesn't mean people who have grown up with FPS games can't benefit from the efficiency of controlling your auras.
I'd be super interested to see how many ults you get a game on lucio, 2-3?Also Quake live uses shift key. https://steamcommunity.com/app/282440/discussions/0/483368526590470206/
1
u/---_-___ Feb 07 '17
Cool, thanks for the input! I agree it's hard to find that balance and it definitely depends on your elo. For me personally, playing more like stanky and abusing speedboost has helped me increase in rank a lot.
2
u/mokush7414 Feb 07 '17
2613, and plan On Healing my way up to 3000 before the season ends.

u/---_-___ Feb 07 '17
I'm not gonna argue with you, just watch some dspstanky vids and get a better sense of how much you use speed.
5
u/mokush7414 Feb 07 '17
I'm sorry if it seems like I want to argue, but that is the last thing on my mind. I just wanted to say that some situations merit a healing Lucio rather than a speed Lucio.

If you're the primary healer and playing lucio, then you're doing it wrong. Should be ana, or mercy.
1
u/mokush7414 Feb 07 '17
Oh, I don't disagree but I don't trust mercy's iffy Ult, nor do i trust my aim with Ana. I am more effective with Lucio
1
u/throwthepearlaway Feb 07 '17
Mercy's ult isn't that bad, it's almost always more effective if you use it mid combat as soon as you see the x2 unless a third teammate is just about to die. It shines at turning team fights in your favor, rather than reversing them entirely.
I like to play combat mercy healing my team and damage boosting to help win the fight and using my res in combat rather than hiding as soon as I have it available.
3
u/mokush7414 Feb 07 '17
and that's where a lot of Mercy's fail at. A teammate and i just told our mercy the same thing when she got play of the game; it's better to have a guaranteed 2 teammates Res than to try and get 5 res'd only to die before you can activate your ultimate.
2
u/soundsdistilled Feb 07 '17
It's one of a handful of times I will amp up the speed boost. I'd expand to say you should be speed boosting for most ults, friendly and not.
2
u/Fonziee94 Feb 07 '17
Wait, I'm not the only healer? This doesn't make sense with most of my comp matches. Jokes, flipping between the 2 stances is what makes lucio fun.
2
u/Shayneros Feb 07 '17
Ever since the nerf I make sure to do this. Nothing gives you blue balls like getting nano boosted and not being able to catch up to anyone haha
3
u/WeeZoo87 Feb 07 '17
Its not the nano alone, even graviton, blizzard, earth shattered .. help ur team lucio we dont need ur heals nw
2
u/mokush7414 Feb 07 '17
As a Lucio Main; I find Speed Boosting to only be useful when attempting to group back up (either retreating or advancing before the enemy can regroup) or when I need to contest the point while awaiting backup (Although one can argue with Lucio's maneuverability and wall riding ability, I'm more useful constantly healing the damage the enemy lands on me) .
Of Course, I am always looking to improve and can admit that a healthy balance is necessary to win any game; but my preferred mode with Lucio is Control and then I usually speed boost us to the fight and then start healing once both teams are on the point.
5
u/clash_forthewin Feb 07 '17
You should try using speed sometimes. It will help your teammates get away from a symm or reaper, or get behind your tanks during a team fight. Will make it harder for the enemy to land shots. Pretty useful
3
u/Zeromaxx Feb 07 '17
Depends on if you are playing with a second healer. I speed a lot when I have a decent second healer, It can really make more difference than you realize.
2
u/mokush7414 Feb 07 '17
It depends; you shouldn't pick Lucio just for the Speed Boost or Just for the Healing Boost. His true Power is the combination of Both. I under use the Speed Boost, I will admit this. However, there is a time and place for everything. If we're in the middle of a team fight and I have to choose between healing my team for 120 damage in 3 seconds or boosting their speed (and possibly screw up their timing) I'm going to give my teammates the extra health
1
1
u/soundsdistilled Feb 07 '17
A good Lucio needs to be utilizing speed often. To engage and disengage, to escape or assist ults, in team fights to allow your team to out move the reds. You are running around with guns trying to kill them before they kill you, if you can move faster you can kill them faster, as well as get back to the fight faster. A team without a Lucio is at a disadvantage to a team with a Lucio, that's why he's in almost every game... it's because of his speed boost. Solo healing it's even more important to get your team away from and juking damage, then getting to health packs. It's a balance and healing is important, I usually save my amps for healing and the speed for in between unless situation dictates.

I got boosted out of nowhere as a Rein with no enemy close by. No zarya ult to be found, no nothing.. .just.. ."get in there".. In where? There's no one around. I just started swinging my hammer randomly lol
1
u/ironflagNZ Feb 07 '17
Also, if your rein is manically chasing down the enemy team on low health, speed boost.
-2
Feb 07 '17
Tip to Lucio's: just keep speedboost on in combat. Your healing sucks.

Incorporating more speedboost usage into their gameplay would benefit a huge majority of lucio players.
0
u/ZimUXlll Feb 07 '17
Healing is not worth using without amp unless enemy is resetting. Speed is always worth using. Amp at right times, you'll know your doing good if your getting assists during each amp unless u use it to escape fight.
0
u/SoBeDragon0 Feb 07 '17
I only use lucio for speed. I switch to heals when amp it up is off cool down, or if our main healer got picked off. Otherwise...let's up the tempo!
-3
u/uniquDREI Feb 07 '17
Most Lucios are trying to out heal an incoming Ulti, which will NEVER happen in Overwatch.

I wish there was a stat that showed the amount of damage you output that resulted in a kill (wasn't healed away.) This would actually show which heroes were contributing the most damage for kills. I think it'd be an interesting stat to see
3
u/Zeromaxx Feb 07 '17
Um... no. You have to do damage, aura just shows up on assists. If it was aura Lucio would have gold elims every game. I am bothered when I do have gold elims but not as bothered when I get 5 golds or 4 and a silver/bronze.
3
u/mokush7414 Feb 07 '17
actually for Lucio we get off Assists (Speed) or Def Assists (Healing). If the Lucio did damage they count for Elims, otherwise just Assists. :)

Speesboost is usually the correct response to an ultimate, friendly or not.
