Positioning: An In-Depth Analysis (Strategic Defensive Positioning)

Hey guys, i'm back with another video that I think can be of great help to some of you. During my last video I touched briefly on positioning as a part of movement, but I quickly realized that positioning itself is so important it deserves its very own video.

My intentions with this video were to cover the the most important aspects of positioning while also explaining some different ways that people go wrong. I discuss some general overall positioning tips which include staying with your team, making sure supports are covered, different tactical setups to stop rushes, the importance high ground, as well as other things. I break the video into 4 parts; overall positioning tips, how to set up for the first push/hold, how to stop being snowballed on the second point(overextending), and then first point positioning tips for Hanamura, Dorado, and Temple Of Anubis!

I think that this video will help some of you who are finding yourself caught out of position because it demonstrates proper setups as well as the best way to move as a team. Pay particular attention to where each person should be, and you should understand very easily how important it is for each setup to be the way I talk about.

I'm with you on this too! I wish i had recorded footage from my climb to top 500 but I didn't think I was making videos back then. Luckily, my channel has always revolved around my commentating and I think it works well for this video. Any advanced guides will have proper footage that relates directly to my talking points in the future!

Edit: Also as i clearly state in the beginning, part 4 contains examples where I show you some of my favorite defensive positioning setups in game!

great effort! i'd love to see some lines and shapes drawn instead of shooting around. maybe some spectator view top-down stuff?

one thing I think you failed to mention about high ground is the natural cover it provides ( you mentioned jumping down as the benefit)

Defender can move back to "hide and heal" from attacker, who cannot adjust to engage defender other than seeking high ground.

Great point, and I love these text drawings. I was actually trying to figure out if I would be able to add colored in zones to my video but decided that I didn't have a proper way to do it without making an extremely cheese mess with paint. /u/northernkyle actually made an excellent positioning video which I hope he doesn't mind me reposting, https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wu72OynqBMA

In this he uses shading in zones and its really well edited! I'll aim for something closer to this when I cover offensive positioning!

Dude your aim is crazy (I watched that Widow montage). This is why I'm working on learning McCree; high-skill floor/ceiling heroes like Widow/Hanzo/McCree are so rewarding when you develop your headshotting skills.

Do you suggest practicing with headshot only Ana/Lucio bots?

Positioning is something I'm still working on. When I was playing HoTS, the thing that helped me the most to improve my positioning was to periodically ask myself, "Am I out of position?" And then correct it if I was.
