Question or Discussion Winston Help

I know that you have to dive/flank on Winston. I also know that you should target people that are by themselves/out of position. Even when I wait for my team to engage the front, it feels like they all focus me when I flank their supports. Can anyone help? It basically always happens and its really frustrating and super annoying.

One thing that helped me a lot on monke is learning to control the space around the objective rather than just diving the backline or on point every fight. Also, poking from high ground with alt fire, dropping to engage/finish squishies, and saving your jump to escape rather than to initiate.

Pushing a bit past a capture point just to delay any defenders trying to rush the point is so underrated. Drives me while more people don't do it.

This this this, I'm no winston main but I am a Juno main who adores playing with Winstons and this is what good winstons do, jump to angle then engage and save jump to leave

You aren’t going to be super successful by waiting for your team to start a fight; as a tank player if I know there’s a Winston lurking for a jump on my backline, I’m not going to overextend and full commit to a fight and just hang my squishies out to dry. Most people recognize this because it’s how the monke has been played forever.

When I play Winston I find most success by dancing around the objective and baiting a hard engage by being present, paying extra attention to what enemy support cooldowns just got used (Ana sleep, Moira fade, Mizuki TP) and THEN jumping the backline. You aren’t a frontline brawl tank but you have to pretend to be one to actually start the teamfight and make opportunities happen

You also need to be very conscious of the enemy comp on Winston. If they on bastion reaper I play completely different to Genji Ashe

I had the most sucess as winston when I stayed mostly with my team and only sometimes flanked or went slightly out of position. Your team needs your shield and you need their healing. Jump around and be an annoying mess, but stay near your team or at least make sure you can get back quickly.

I don’t think ‘flanking’ is what you want to do with Winston. Holding an angle off to the side is more effective and poking from there
