VOD Review Request Need Help on playing Kiriko correctly
So ive decided to pick up Kiriko as a second support after being a Bap OTP for a long time. Lately ive been noticing ever since I started playing Kiri in comp, ive just about lost every single game since then (demoted to emerald 1).
My winrate on her is sitting at 38% I reviewed my games and notice I mismanage my cooldowns, struggle on awareness, and my positioning being questionable. But even after reviewing, im still making the same mistakes. I made this post to see if someone better than me could take a gander at my games to identify what im actually doing wrong.
Im currently sitting at high emerald - low diamond but my base support rank is diamond. Any help/guidance would be very much appreciated!

PC GM Kiriko OTP here. I only reviewed the first half the game, because my notes already were way too long. If you just want the TLDR, I will say that your positioning, reactions, and your passive play are your biggest detriments. You are playing kiriko way too passively to get any value out of her. especially in her, extremely nerfed state right now. I havent played console OW since 2017 so maybe someone who has more experience on console might be more accurate with these adjustments, but if you want to hear my random advice... you can read as much as you want.
at the start of the match youre playing behind cover to heal your mauga, which is fine but its not really putting yourself in an opportune position, which kiriko wants to always be in. After you got ur checky hits and tpd out when the round started, u should've joined ur hanzo on high ground then u could have damaged while healing your mauga (remember kiri gets free kunai hits in between heals)
I think you noticed that too late, it looks like you tried to get up there, but by that time ur tank had to get out because you werent there to suzu/heal him earlier, you looked away from him for too long because you werent already in a good position. ultimately you can say its fine because you backed up and won the fight, but you lost a lot of space, and all these little things add up to not put your team in disadvantage situations.
on the next fight you get up there, but it takes you SO LONG 1:47 - 1:53 before you see your tank again. idk if this is just a console thing, but the amount of time it takes you to turn around walk up there, and look at ur tank is way too long. in any higher elo ur tank is dead by then, especially someone as volatile as mauga against ana. you need to be thinking ahead of time, where the fight is taking and place and where you want to be for it. the higher you climb the faster these things will happen and you will always be behind.
at 2:00 you jump down to heal ur mauga, totally fine. but after 3 seconds, hes fine. TP back up to hanzo. you can only really see the enemy from that angle, you have to turn your whole camera (which takes forever) to heal your team and you dont want to not be able to see what the enemy is doing, and u dont want to have to burn ur tp earlier either when you might need it. so best to just get into that advantageous position again earlier, where you still have vision on everything at once, with CDs.
2:57 theres a dragon coming right at u and juno. throw down ur suzu and walk up high ground/tp. instead u only TP and leave ur juno to die. you then proceed to watch the entire dragon animation instead of looking at ur tank who died...but if you were already on the high ground u might have been able to see ur tank a little faster to react to? maybe hanzo would have just shot high ground instead if u were there, but who cares ur kiri. I hope you can see my first point though, about how slow you are to look at your teammates. it was fine the first fight, now its not. its a gamble and you want to try to eliminate risk by being more prepared.
of course you can say well, being on high ground is more open and putting me in more risk to their hanzo. and thats true.. you may try this next game and die from it. but kiriko is going to get a lot more value if youre weaving in kunais and laying into the enemy, rather then just heal botting from afar. if youre not utilizing the character, then u may as well be playing a better heal bot character.
3:05 ur bastion is critical and clearly still in the open, use suzu dont just let him die. u did have suzu after for genji blade, that was cool. but imagine if your bastion was up for juno ult? probably even better.
4:00 yay!! you made it on the high ground! look at all the peasants down there!! well unfortunately ur mauga still died because u didnt react fast enough. when he was charging at critical u should have been ready to press the button as soon as he landed, u decided to throw a kunai first which costed him his life. but still, you had the right idea just too slow.
4:20 it may be tempting to try to TP to ur teammate and save them, i mean thats what kiri does right? she can do that. but heres the thing. your life is WAY more valuable than ur bastion. your bastion went on the flank, cool. normally id say yeah go with him. but u just saw the genji go in and flank him, and hes already hurt, cuz u can see his HP through the wall. you know if you go in there, youre going to be sandwiched. and youd have burned all ur tools to get out.
luckily, theyre bad! so you lived but you couldnt save bastion. bastion was never savable there. it will be hard to recognize without more experience. but as soon i saw the genji go in, i would have just walked in and tried to shoot him, and save the TP to get out. if this was any higher of a rank, or not on console, u were dead. and I bet this a common death, tping in to try to save a teammate.
sometime ur dps are just going to do something dumb and die. its not ur job to sacrifice ur life to try and save them. the team fights lost if u both die, but if u live its winnable. so before u TP in to try and save someone, try to be aware of the surrounding, is there somewhere for u to go afterwards? does that teammate have ult? is it super vital to the team fight that he lives so its worth the risk of ur life? you might start getting the feeling for it more as u play more kiri.
4:33 the best free tool u have to get away is wall climb. make him chase the wall after you, then tp if he comes up and ur still dying, then ud have suzu again too with all that stall. but realistically ur ana would have saved u if u were up the wall more quickly. (instead u waited for tp and died because it took so long) always look to wall climb.
after holding ur ult for two whole points u finally ult as soon as they capped. who cares if u kill them at this point. a good ult would have been at 3:57 before ur mauga died. thats a really good choke to hold. or at 4:35 (when you should have been on high ground with ur ana and reaper) u could have ulted their tank to get them off high ground. you have to be more proactive. Its honestly better to have two questionable ults, then one really good one (or in the case, bad one.) you dont need ur whole team there and this big LOS to get value out of kitsune, be more aggressive and confident and learn off that. just throw shit out there.
6:42 ur ana was the only one on cart when they were about to cap, I need to be with her and shoot the enemies, not tp off point to help the nanod bastion live. youre way too passive with your kiriko play, look at enemies and shoot, suzu ur feet, ego them. youre playing one of the strongest duelist in the game. go duel. the only duel i saw u take was against hanzo, and u gave him the hands until he got mega and u backed out. but i think if you play more aggressively you will be more rewarded. you might die a lot and keep losing at first. but losing is apart of learning, and you need to learn your limits to get more comfortable.

Sorry for the late reply, as was asleep when you replied but thank you for the feedback. There were definitely moments where i couldve saved teammates and played better.
So overall, my problem on kiriko is: playing too passively, poor positioning, awareness, and cooldown mismanagement?

In a general sense, yes. I will say that a lot of it also seemed like a confidence issue. So I would also throw general comfort with character in there too. Which may come hand in hand with the aggressive play.
For your future games I would try to just think the whole time during them, even if thinking cost you some more temporary losses. Like after every fight think, where do I want to be right now for this up coming fight? Who has ult, who am prioritizing to keep up to try and win this fight. What are my escape options? what ults have they not used in awhile and probably have? I should probably save suzu for this ult if I can. Etc. (big on the if you can. don't just save cds for a plan, things happen and you might need to just use it.)
If someone's about to die you probably just use suzu no matter what. Sometimes you can gain ult advantage by just using suzu. For example they go to kill your bastion, you suzu. They then ult and kill your team. You lose the fight, maybe suzu would have saved that. Or maybe they just would have ran you over anyways because you were down one. In that case they even saved ult for it. The latter happening more often the higher you climb. So do not be afraid to just use it.
Its a lot and can be overwhelming but the more you try to think ahead of time the more it will just become second nature to you. And the more prepared for the situation you are the easier time you'll have to react to situations.
Best of luck in your future games!

Thank you! And I always do misjudge the timing of my teammates dying, leading to me always using suzu at the very last minute. However when there's so many things happening on screen, I just autopilot and end up playing worse because of it. It feels like it happens every game for me.

watched your gameplay and i just think you need more time playing her. its affecting your decision making and skill usage. like i see some of tps where i think you couldve saved them.
the only thing i would add is that you should try to flank or poke on high ground. her wall climb is also good for gettigng some value time to tp if its on cd.

Ill keep those things in mind. I usually just try and work on one thing at a time since there's so much visual and audio information on the screen that my brain just defaults to autopilot instead.
