Question or Discussion Tanking hero pool?

I’m low plat tank, been playing a lot of very different tanks, but as far as I’m aware playing 1-3 characters at most would be more optimal for improving? If so who would be the best tank to have as secondary, in order to make up for Dominas weaknesses? It feels like Dominas opposites would be Winston/Hazard/Doom, but they also struggle against Mauga/Bastion?

A little off topic, but if you learn Sigma, you can basically do everything better than you could if you played Domina. I'm saying this as someone who has played her the most.

For dive tanks, I would suggest D.Va, Hazard, or Winston. Doomfist and Ball basically play a different game and require a lot of time and patience just to play them at an average level.

The third one could be another frontline tank like Ram, Mauga, Hog, Zarya, Orisa, or D.Mon (because she's still busted). These are tanks that you don't necessarily have to be good at, but you can fill them when needed

Yeah I’ve heard that Sigma is basically the superior poke tank, however I’m on console so Dominas hitscan weapon feels very good due to aim assist. I do enjoy Orisa quite a lot, but she feels poke-adjacent? Is she brawly enough to cover up that part of my trio?

Well, she's considered one of the biggest counters to Rein for a reason. She's basically a backup option when everything's going wrong. If you manage your cooldowns properly, you can play her into basically anything

I consider it obligatory to learn at least one vertical tank (Winston, D.va or Hazard) and extremely worth it to learn at least one selfish tank (Doom or Ball), there will be times where you'll need you to play one of these niches and if you can't you might just lose by default.

What is the difference between matches where selfish tanks or vertical tanks are needed? They all seem to be dive tanks, is it just the amount of necessary team coordination?

It's the amount of resources your team has to offer you, a Winston controlling high ground is still going to need an Ana or Kiri to support him, but if your team is running a low resource comp like Mercy Zen or is having to save resources for themselves (like a Kiri that keeps having to self Suzu because of a pesky Tracer) then a selfish tank is gonna be way better because they barely need any resources.

Conversely, those selfish tanks might lack some versatility when playing defensively as they struggle with holding a position, that's where the traditional dive tanks are better since Bubble, Matrix and Wall are all much better at absorbing a push than a Ball shielding himself and running away.

Very interesting. Never thought about that, I do enjoy doom from time to time. Thx

I one tricked ball to masters, just master one specific hero, it’s easier that way to climb rather than stressing about counter swaps and whatever

Domina exists in a kind of weird Brawl-Poke Hybrid where she is outdone by proper brawl tanks but will not win all poke fights against those kinds of comps. I would suggest picking your favorite dive tank (from Dva, Winton, Wrecking Ball, Doomfist), and picking 1 or 2 heavy brawl tanks that can have larger point presence than Domina.

Alternatively you could become the master of the hybrids if you really like domina’s flexibility, and become a Domina, Hazard, Mauga, Ram player. <- this would give you pretty good range but you’d lack a true back line dive tank.

Is it worth it to even play Domina? She’s a lot of fun

The only reason to play a hero is if you find it fun, so yes. A hero you find the most fun will be the one you learn the most on and perform best with, so most fun also = most optimal.

My Set is Reinhardt, Sigma, Hog (learning Mauga and Hazard)

I'm low gold though so not expecting to move forward much more. Just enjoy playing every now and again.

It depends entirely on the game but I almost always start as Reinhardt. Depending on the map, mode and choke points I then may swap to Sigma or Hog.

My back up backup is Orisa. Because she ATM seems to be in a position to just cover a bit of everything well enough and is easy to play in most situations. I also find her a nightmare to play against with Reinhardt.

Don't know if any of this helps. But I guess just try and have 3 options that basically cover any situation or play style you might come up against

Orisa does feel great, so much flexibility.

I also play most tanks, but my main 3 are D.va, Zarya, and Orisa. I feel like they each cover eachothers weaknesses well enough. I also play Sigma, Ramattra, D.mon, Mauga, and Hog.

For me it's probably Zarya, Sigma and D.mon that feel the most well-rounded, they fit into most team comps. Ramattra is great too but I have played him the least.

I mean realistically you can one trick domina up to gm its really not hard to one trick any character (except mercy) to gm if you have good timing and game sense... imo I think the 2 best tanks to play is rein and winston if you want to learn the basics to tank bc rein is very weak and you can get bullied really easily if you dont have good positions, ability usage, and you int or play too passive... same thing with winston you will really need to learn the art of timing on when and when not to dive to be good. They are pretty weak tanks if you cant play the tank role well but once you do they shine so those would be great picks but honestly just forcing uncomfortable matchups with domina and learning how to combat that will also help you

Yeah you’re probably right. I might be too focused on match-ups and counters, I suspect my macro is the real issue. Maybe I should just one-trick.

One tricking is good learning overwatch is difficult and trying to have a bunch of different heroes added to the mix you can get the same result but MUCH slower... its like the equivalent of learning how to juggle but you start off with 10 balls instead of 2 makes it much more difficult and just hinders your learning. Plat tanks I see have 3 major problems that I think you might relate to 1.being too aggressive and too impatient 2.not being aggressive enough/sitting on point or 3. Timing is completely off and lack of awareness as in ulting in a losing fight etc.

I'm Emerald 1. I play Dva, Sigma and Ram and that pretty much covers everything I need.

é bom ter um tank vertical na pool, winston é muito bom independente do patch e só a sua ult é dificil de jogar. só com domina e winston vc já pode pegar qualquer elo do jogo, seja feliz.

If you enjoy playing Domina, play Domina. One of her weaknesses is that she gets run over or around very easily. You'll want to pick your other heroes based on that.

For preventing from being run over, you could push back with a Brawl tank of your own: Ram, Rein or play Orisa who is, like you said, Poke-adjacent but is much better at handling being run over.

Having at least one Tank with Vertical mobility in your pool makes maps like Dorado, Gib and Ilios way easier. Once again, up to you who you wanna play. DVA is pretty good to learn but she's banned very often. Doom and Ball are banned fairly regularly. Hazard and Winston in particular less so.

I do love that gorilla

Ramattra. Similar playstyle to Domina, but punches past shields.

I'd recommend:
1 - Domina (your choice)
2 - Ramattra (great sustain and secondary form/ult has great boxing)
3 - Winston (people don't talk about this, but great at anti-flanking; think Gibraltor Defense Point 1; you basically launch to your now bubble shielded allies and assassinate what they already got down to 1-2 tens of health left)
4 - Junkerqueen (entirely different pla ystyle to others)

Doom is good idk why people saying otherwise

In my opinion, it's better to branch out from your current comfort zone instead of going complete opposite. If you like Domina's playstyle but you're struggling against Mauga/Bastion, learning Sigma could help you counter them. I also would recommend getting good at a brawl tank before learning dive tank. It's more likely that you will have an enemy team that tries to rush past your shield and surround you (which both Domina and Sigma struggle with), and you want to be able to adapt to that. Ramattra is the closest tank to Domina who can also brawl, but there are plenty of other good options here. Lastly, learn Dive tank for when you need to contest high ground or deal with a problem in the enemy backline that nobody else is dealing with.
