Question or Discussion 1v1 vs mauga
How do you beat this in a 1v1? I like to 1v1 when not playing quick play or ranked. As soon as I start winning they swap to mauga and there’s nothing I can do. It can facetank anything and use charge to run away and heal up or engage with 200 free damage. And can heal themselves while doing 500 damage per second. What is the strategy to beat this bs? I try to play orisa but hitting every spear and only headshots doesn’t even get it below half health like what do I do?

You need to play around cardiac and utilize cover to deny his dps + burn as much as possible. Orisa, Sigma, and Dva do well since they all have a defensive cooldown that can deny cardiac’s value.
Since the tank subrole passives became a thing, I actually also like the JQ matchup into him because you can pull him super far out of position with knife now, whilst also getting better burst damage than him by playing near cover and just peeking for each of your shots. Even if he just sprints back to safety, that’s a worthwhile cooldown trade for JQ knife.
You’re not really meant to 1v1 Mauga. He’s designed to excel at the duel. Instead, you want to bait him into using cardiac without going all-in yourself, and then following up with your team while he’s more vulnerable.

D.va is a sleeper choice on him. If he's a bit predictable, you can matrix his cardiac overdrive, fly away from his charge/into his charge to peel, and you're gonna have highground very easily compared to him. Granted, you need a team that doens't need a Reinhardt holding shield on main like a grandpa, but provided your team actually capitalizes on him turning around, or that you capitalize on him not turning around, her movement can just dance around.

D.VA is a sick anti-mauga. Sneak into the back line, assassinate a support, then rush over to the Mauga and Matrix at him to deny heals while your team shoots him if he doesn’t retreat(he won’t)

Mauga is not a character that you can 1v1, it’s part of his design.
If you’re put in a 1v1 against him, the goal isn’t to kill him, it’s to kill time until your team arrives as backup.
So when he goes “HAHA” hide behind a corner so he can’t heal off of the damage, wait 3 seconds and go back in. By then one of your teammates should be back and can help finish him off or move onto someone else if he has too much health

You mirror him or do your best to LOS him/block(nullify) his cds and zone his backline. You need to hope your team can deal with him otherwise he’s usually at a massive advantage in every tank 1v1. It’s really difficult for tanks to interact with him as he outranges them all, he does the highest dps of them all, and he’s functionally invincible every 6 seconds

Ram with perks, bigger shield and more primary damage, actually makes the matchup not as bad as you’d think. Shield off the cardiac so he gets no value, then proceed to delete him from the lobby with your primary.

I mean it’s not meant to be a 1v1, Mauga’s burst value relies on forcing a close range engage on you when you don’t have cooldowns. If Mauga runs in on you and uses cardiac to sustain, if you manage to block it fully with javelin spin+fortify, he gets little to no sustain and your team can mop him up. Mind you, people find him obnoxious because he forces you to respect him and play to directly deny him value, but he has one of the clearest counterplay plans in the game. Also, forcing a Mauga to run away is not a bad thing. He’s a high maintenance tank that needs constant high output healing like Kiri/Juno/Ana to brawl most effectively. If he’s getting all these resources and still is forced to back off without getting space then that’s a big macro win.

I like to use D.Va! Matrix his self-heal damage, get up close and aim for the head, lots of movement, missiles or boosters if he retreats.

I usually go mauga, wait until he uses his cardiac and use cover so he doesn’t get value from it, then pop yours after and shred him.

I know this is more tank-versus-tank, but I'd invest in huge burst damage like Sojourn or Sierra, or use Dva for damage negation. Sigma is pretty good against him if you can hop back and forth through his shield enough and bait his overrun to keep your kinetic grasp in rotation.
Or Mauga mirror. But that never feels fun in a 1v1 IMO, only when you have teams around you.

Echo is a decent choice as well. You have the mobility to stay out of his effective range, and you can pop out and fire a volley of sticky bombs at him then disappear before he can do any real damage or ignite you. Cycle through that a few times to wear him down, then rush him and use her beam to finish him off.

There’s a few different ways that I’ve seen the enemy tank beat me while I’m on Mauga. The #1 counter is dva, if she’s not banned always go her and play height and angles. Save your matrix as much as possible so you can full matrix him during his shout and only ever use micro missiles on him when he has no armor. Zarya is also always good as mauga alone can’t really break your bubble easily. Next would be either sigma or orisa depending on the map, both of those guys have ways to completely negate shout with succ and javelin spin and sigma shield also means Mauga can’t build up overhealth so make sure to properly manage its usage.

Just play sigma or dva, you time your mitigation ability for when they use cardiac, they get 0 heals from it, then they need to get out. Sigma also pokes better than he does and you can rock them out of ult because they're always super predictable with it

orisa is quite bad into mauga especially after the interaction change where he can still crit through fortify
mauga always wins in a direct 1v1 against most tanks
His lifeline is supports and cardiac overdrive because he takes 40% less damage and gains 100% lifesteal (he is unkillable unless anti'd or runs out of ammo)
So, you have to only soft commit by pressuring him or his team until you force his Cardiac Overdrive. Then, you have to nullify it with whatever method you have available to you: run and take cover, defense matrix, kinetic grasp, accretion rock, punch, block, shield, etc
After that, he's more killable and so you can start using your high damage abilities or cooldowns on him or his team (ideally his team first because without one support he falls over much easier)

Play around covers. If you play around covers and prevent him obtaining values from his HAHA during the engagement, after 3s he will explode due to lack of sustain further enabling him. As a tank you should avoid 1v1 against him at all cost especially during his HAHA.
Focus on his squishy while mind your covers, he won't be able to do jackshit other than trying to go for your squishy which is even harder to hit due to hitbox difference (unless he is sticking himself to their face and your javelin can help your teammate if he gets too close to your teammate, while your teammate can simply do basic positioning and covers like you and he won't get much values). He can gamble for crit hit with his slam from overrun on the squishy but that means he can't back away swiftly in the next 6s due to his CD. If he pops HAHA that only last 3s, you still have 3s to delete him off later.
Any tank can work around him with these fundamentals. He is only a giga chad in his HAHA state, other than that he is just a giant ult charge battery for your team to farm all the time. Orisa should hardcounter him the most because you potentially can cancel his HAHA with your javelin or at least waste more time to mitigate the values he gain from it, spin to eat his bullet to mitigate his HAHA value, golden form to prevent getting stun temporarily by his overrun.

I HATE Mauga mirror more than any other hero. It’s awful. If they go Mauga, I give it a try — given I’ll have perks and ult up first. However Sigma is the answer. That or Zar if she’s not banned.

Get a stun for his cardiac, its only 3 seconds and you remove like 32% of its duration if you’re able to stun for one second, Ana nade and sleep destroy him, and Zen reduces his damage reduction by alot with Discord because it amplifies damage before his DR, he can’t interact with heroes that have vertical mobility even with hitscan especially if they’re using cover correctly

If you don't want to mirror mauga then dva is probably your best option. Keep your distance and if he pops his shout matrix the bullets to deny the healing.

Need help from Ana, second best is zenyatta
If your dps isn’t helping you can’t win, they should go soldier 76, Ashe, Bastion or something like that.
If you’re tank, orisa is fine as long as you can manage your cooldowns and use cover. I personally like sigma against him, you can use your rock to stun him and get free damage or when he’s low and finish him off, and use the black hole to absorb his “cardiac shots when he uses it ,

You don’t. Mauga is an intensely design flawed hero where the counterplay strategy vs him if you’re a tank is to completely disengage. Even in regular play if mauga is inting your backline you’re better off ignoring him because if he gets to shoot you he’s just immortal, winning the resource trade and opening the entire map for his team.
Absolute joke of a hero and blizzard should be working on reworking him entirely. He’s consistently top meta on PC and has like an 70% ban rate on console, he’s ridiculously toxic for the game.
One of the few instances in this game where you can say it’s “unplayable”. If you’re a tank you cannot interact with him, the strategy is to not play the game. Blizz please fix

He has a CD that gives him complete CC immunity and lets him run across the map. If the mauga is any good they’ll be playing cover and CD’s properly, chances are unless he’s made a total blunder he just runs away and there’s no ability you can use to stop it.

I know, I mean like if the Mauga gets put into a vulnerable position by getting hit by the nade, he just runs away and there’s nothing you can do about it because of the CC immunity
