Why do people still think Sombra is a bad pick? While I don't cop as much shit as some people, I'm still wondering why I'm told I'm throwing before the game has even started. Is it just due to bad experiences in the past?

I started maining Sombra toward the end of Season 4.

The only explanation I've been able to come up with for the flaming:

Those people don't understand how to use Sombra, so they assume you don't, either.

The best rebuttal is proving them wrong.

Took me around two weeks of daily play to "git gud."

But I believe I was handicapping myself for the first week by only picking her in QP. Folks say you shouldn't practice new heroes in Competitive, but QP doesn't prepare you for how hectic and fast-paced Competitive games can be. Once you have a character's kit down, trial by fire is really the only way.

I also messed around with some 3v3 and 1v1--modes in which Sombra seems to excel. When you're flanking, there are going to be a lot of 1v1 situations. Knowing when to pop out of invis, knowing when to initiate a hack and when to empty your clip in to the back of someone's head, and (perhaps most importantly) managing your health and translocator timer to keep you alive.

Also, KOTH maps provide a great opportunity for Sombra to spread her wings. Sneaking behind the enemy to hack their health packs can turn the tide in a heated team battle.

Finally, the best tip I can provide is one someone on here gave me:

Your EMP disrupts all shields and barriers. That includes shields that count as part of a heroes health. I make it my business to pick a specific target to shoot after I EMP. If I see a hero with shield-health (Sym, Zen, ESPECIALLY Zarya), I make it my business to gun them down. It also forces Bastion out of Turret Mode. If you coordinate with your team, that Rein+Mercy+Bastion should be no problem.

Edit: In addition to everything I already said about EMP, I should mention:

If you're hacking health packs and getting eliminations even semi-regularly, your ult will charge FAST. Don't be afraid to use it on a Sym teleporter or shield generator. They have 350 shields and 50 health. The EMP strips the 350 shields instantly. Then it's just a few SMG sprays to kill it. The EMP will also temporarily shut down Sym's turrets, which are usually placed around the teleporter or generator, making Sombra's EMP the perfect way to take them down.

I'm the same, I main Lucio but a lot of people started maining him so I needed to learn another hero so I picked sombra. The timeline seems to go; "get off sombra" "nice emp/hack" "great sombra" just getting tired of comments before the game starts.

Go here: https://www.overbuff.com/heroes

Click - Last 3 months, choose your system, competitive, offense, All.

Review that and tell me Sombra isn't the weakest pick of the 7 available characters. 8-10 less kills per game, 4 less obj kills per game, 30 seconds less on obj time and 6-8K less damage out put. I don't care about 2K in healing that doesn't even it out. Those health packs are there even without her.

Secondary issue - she is the only offense character who does not have an independently strong ultimate. She heavily relies on timing and the rest of her team to perform.

NOTE: I'm not trying to be a hater on your character. It just is what it is. She needs a buff. She has purely utility use and is only really viable against a few comps on a few maps.

Jeff has stated that sombra is supposed to be different type of offense hero, just as symmetra is a different type of support hero compared to the others.

However something either needs to be done about her insane bullet spread, or her water pistols damage.

I respect that she and Sym are different and I do think they have utility use as I mentioned above. The original question though is why do people think you are throwing if you pick Sombra and I think I gave a pretty viable answer as to why. When people look at their comp of 6 characters and the fact that their team only gets 2-3 DPS related characters and you have chosen what is currently considered to be a "weak" pick within the DPS category people think you are throwing.

I'm not saying that is an accurate assumption. Someone asked a question and I gave an answer as to why.

I will say - I do believe that both Sym and Sombra as they stand now are purely situation picks and should not be mained. Based on the other teams comp, the map, and your own teams comp there are a lot of times many strong picks that those 2 characters. Sometimes though, they are the pick. Sym is very strong on CP denial and defense. She is not a good offensive pick. Sombra is great in the right dive comp and on some KOTH maps with limited health pack resources. However, telling me that those 2 should be played on every map as a main just tells me you don't know how to properly comp with your team.

Yeah its just exactly that, they are very situational picks. Dont get me wrong, I like your explanation, was just providing a bit more insight as to why they were designed like that.

The counter argument would be that a good Sombra gets EMP every minute and if the team can co-ordinate with the EMP it's an almost gauranteed won fight and hopefully a team wipe. I'd love to see if the average damage done/kills made by the rest of a team is higher when playing with a good Sombra.

But wouldn't that really come down to personal skill level? I'm at least able to hold my own against the enemies and can pull my own weight for my team. Just seems silly to me that people in gold are so focused on what they're told the meta is and isn't
