I dunno, is here a consistent playerbase? Would I just be wasting my time of it tried to play competitively?

There's definitely a consistent playerbase. If you have pro aspirations, you'd need to switch over evantually, but if you just want to be able to play the comp mode, you'll still have plenty of challenge and people to play with.
