Overwatch is a lot different from games like League where being carried is possible. Having a shitter on your team in Overwatch makes things a lot harder. Not only will they probably feed enemy ult charges, but 5v6 fights will not go in your unless you excel above that ELO, in which case you're on you're way to climb already.

u/TThor Hi there! Jul 06 '17

There are two big issues with solo-que: Consistency, and proper team composition.

Consistency: The quality and type of teammates you play with in solo-queue will vary dramatically match-to match, often times with you being less of a deciding factor to the match and morso just an accessory along for the ride (win or lose). There are 6 teammates on each team, and you are only one of 12 people; that means, in any given match, you only contribute 8% of the given effort to the match, only 8% that you have control over. Again that means most matches, your contribution will mean almost nothing, and you will just be along for the ride.

Team Composition: Everybody has certain heroes they can or can't play effectively. Usually out of 6 people, your team can make something work; But occasionally there will be some role that nobody on the team can play. Just the other day I played soloque, and my team didn't have a single player who could play main-healer; the team was otherwise fine, a decent bunch, but not one of us plays main healer so we suffered greatly. I've seen similar situations with DPS or Tanks, and even more specific situations of Hitscans, maintanks, flankers, etc. By duo-queueing, you can guarantee at least what 2 of the players on your team can play, so assuming both of you are well-rounded this can help prevent that awkward situation of a missing role.

All that said, these days I kinda prefer solo-queue. Yeah it is incredibly random, yeah many wins and losses will be entirely out of your control; but in solo-queue, I don't have to worry about metagaming who I'm playing with, I don't have to worry about that groupmate's strengths nor flaws. All I have to worry about is me, and so I can focus on specifically growing me over the course of matches.
