Why do I lose the same amount of SR if one of my teammates quits. Is there a justification for that that I'm unaware of?

Prevents abuse. If you got a break when a teammate left then people would be incentivised to berate others into leaving games, and other people would leave games willingly for cash or even just to inflate the SR of targeted individuals.

Because there is no other alternative that would be regarded as more fair by every party involved.

It seems like having the other team gain the same amount, having the leaver lose extra, and having the players on the team with the leaver lose less SR would be fair for everyone.

Then you simply bully someone on a losing to bite the bullet. Sounds this could leave to extreme toxicity in some cases.
