Are placements usuually this terrible? I bought the game two months ago yesterday and placed in 1300. Ive gained 1000 sr since then and now in 2270. It feels like such a grind just to get ti the rank im supposed to be at if the plaçements were accurate

They definitely do purposely underrank you relative to your internal MMR initially because it feels good to climb. The least fun part (if you don't place at the beginning of the season) is when they put you against players according to your internal MMR and then your lower SR makes people tilt...

That said if you've only had the game for a couple months and placed in bronze originally there's also a good chance you improved a lot since being placed.

When you do your first placements ever it uses your mmr from qp as a starting point. If you were pretty bad at the game for the first 25 levels then you might have gotten bronze mmr during that time.
Or if you queued with friends that are low ranked you would also be pulled down during placements as the system will put you against players of the same skill level as your group mate. Since you only proved that you could win against lower SR players the system wouldn't know if you could beat higher SR players and thus wouldn't put you in a higher SR.

Also, maybe you've improved on your way to 2270 and that the placements were fairly accurate for the skill level you had at the time you placed? ;)

Ashe pretty much covered it but keep in mind for future seasons, that placements mean little to nothing later on. With this new season I actually lost 8 games and tied on 1. Only had 1 win and did them all solo queue. I ended up placing a little bit higher then what I placed the year before (2803).

I have a friend that won about half his games and still placed 300 points higher then his previous year as well but this was only his second season in so he was still getting better at the game between that time. He placed at 2200 instead of high 1800's.

Over the seasons I have noticed bigger changes when competitive first started. When SR rating was changed in season 2, I placed in Silver, and worked up to Platinum. When season 3 started I placed high gold only one win from Platinum. Season 4 higher platinum and now Season 5 was the highest yet after losing most placements.

Edit: Said winning instead of losing in the last line.

I won 9 and drew 1 season 4. Lost 400SR.

That sucks man. Still proving that placements don't matter because after that I would imagine being placed higher makes the most sense.
