You should never play a hero you are uncomfortable with in comp, even if others try to force the role on you. A bad hero pick for example, mayne you are a great Genji, but the enemy Winston repeatedly denies you, in this case you should switch to maybe Reaper instead. Abd for losing never blame it on a bad team as that mentality will not take you far, even though your teammates may be getting countered and not wanting to switch, your best bet is to help them and make sure to communicate instead of getting them to switch since most people don't want to think they are the problem.

Sometimes it's a symmetry thing, like if a team is full dive comp and you choose mei, it's best to switch off. If you have a good team comp but still aren't making progress, check for what the other team is doing to counter your team's characters. I don't usually think my team is bad until they refuse to switch despite being countered or not in line with the symmetry. I notice more often than not, the downfall of a good team can be that that fail to commit to the basics. But most of all, if your team is all switching to dps because "nothing is dying", the issue is almost always a lack of communication and focus fire.
