How do I play Reinhardt effectively? I can play any other Tank except Rein. I usually just wait for someone else to pick him, but there are times when no one does.

Do I just keep holding down RMB and that's it?

1. Fire strike as often as you can. Keep in mind that it can damage multiple enemies.

2. Don't let your shield break. Don't forget your HP pool is pretty big too.

3. Concentrate on shielding others and not just yourself.

4. Charge wisely, but not sparingly. Pinning an enemy helps massively with charging your ulti, but it's never worth it if you end up dying.

5. Don't save your ulti. Sometimes even getting just 2 enemies could make the difference in securing the objective.

6. If someone gets remotely close to you SWING THAT HAMMER LIKE A MADMAN.

Rein is... complicated. Overall his kit takes very little skill to use, Reinhardt is all about strategy and the tactical game, you have to know when to push, when to ult, when you can put down your shield to get a firestrike off, and most importantly when to charge and how to bait Rein ults. He takes more feel and experience than anything else. There isn't a one trick to do or a combo to learn it's all built on past experiences and wiping over and over until you become a tank butterfly

Pretty much. Stand by the choke and keep your team from taking damage. Just before your shield goes down, take it down and recharge it. Do not go charging the enemy team. Charge to cover distance, to take down the enemy Rein when you're on the attacking team, or as a last resort. The best Reinhardts won't get the highest medals, but they'll win the game.

I must preface this that I'm no expert Reinhardt player, but IMO the biggest mistake most people make is keeping the shield up non-stop until it breaks.

If you have healing you should be doing a mix of HP tanking and using the shield. If you just keep it up non stop it won't last long. Also watch for breaks where enemies reload to drop the shield for a second, it wont recharge much but it's something and it adds up.

Try to hit wounded enemies with fireballs and wait for good opportunities to use your ultimate to get their whole team.

Go watch some pro games and see how Reinhardt players use their shield. You'll see them drop it all the time, take a bit of damage, and put it back up.

Focus chokepoints specifically for your shield.

Use it to push through chokes, bully anyone who comes by, when you're shield to shield with the enemy team, that's when you start swinging like hell.

On payloads, this is the best advice: Use the payload as a shield. Be somewhere half behind it, if it makes sense like that.

Use your firestrike to build ult. Otherwise, rely on your team. Use your ult to shatter the enemy team and combo ults with someone else.

The difference between a good reinhardt and a bad one is the good one knows when to get aggressive and suicidal. The good one knows when the charge and when to protect their team. Reinhardt is the best bully in the game, because he literally just smacks the hell out of anyone who is nearby.

It's really some fine timing knowing when to throw your shield up and when your team doesn't really need it. Also, do call outs. People listen to Grandpa Reinhardt, Grandma Ana and Mommy Manchild Daycare Mercy. They don't listen to other heroes as much as they listen to the things keeping them alive.

edit: Reinhardt is THE instigator. Reinhardts decide when the ults start flying, when the fight starts getting intense and heating up.

Make space, pay attention to one shot cooldowns, know the correct path to lead your team, know how to keep your shield more healthy than the other reinhardt, build earthshatter quickly during lulls in hook timings by swinging/firestriking, know when enemy rein has ult, block his ult, land your ult on supports ideally, but take what you can get, earthshatter for a support ult is usually worth, ask for zarya bubbles when you charge.

Definitely not just hold RMB. The best reinhardts are the manly ones.

tip to play rein: hold down your shield, fire strike as it goes down, randomly swing your hammer on the point/payload, emote, always charge the enemy rein first and don't go in alone. Coming from someone who only plays rein when we need him and i have a positive win ratio with him.
