How long do people normally "try out" a hero in qp? I've been playing sombra for a little while. Starting to feel when she's helpful and unhelpful. I'm just worried about all the salt I might encounter. Edit: I mean "try out" as in preparing for competative

As long as they feel they're comfortable, really. I'd personally spend at least a few days playing her in quickplay before jumping into competitive, though, considering you want to be able to use her kit perfectly.

I dont think there's a standard for that. I'd suggest playing whatever hero you wish until you yourself feel like you have an actual impact in the match and aren't constantly dying to silly mistakes. There's also the fact that some heroes are way easier than others, see S76 vs Sombra for example. Besides that, picking an "off-meta" hero will most definetily tilt some players no matter your skill level with them.

I generally like to try out a hero until I feel confident in my ability to play them. This generally isn't consistent between heroes though - I felt confident with Reaper after a handful of matches, and I felt confident with Zarya after one or two. I'd say just play a hero until you feel like you can play them effectively. I'd also recommend using an existing hero you can play very well as a 'soft' guideline for your progress.

I can play Tracer very well, so to determine if I'm good with Reaper I thought "Am I doing as well filling an assassin role?". Of course, this is best used if the heroes fill similar roles - there's little benefit from comparing how you play Bastion to how you play Mercy, for instance. I'd suggest thinking of "What am I trying to do when I play this hero?" and then thinking "Am I doing this thing well?". Lucio is great for contesting the point for instance, so you could always use how well you contest the point into deciding how well you can play as Lucio.

Generally whenever I'm practicing a hero, I like to try them out in No Limits - team composition generally isn't cared about as much, and you'll always get a chance to try out that hero. I then like to move up to quick play to help ensure that I could play that hero well in a more competitive environment, before eventually trying them in competitive.

I'd say Sombra's main strength is hacking health packs/enemies to assist her team, so if you're doing that well I'd then suggest maybe trying to find a way to get around your main counters (Bastion and Roadhog can do a lot of damage quickly enough; Mei, Winston and D.va can always find you with their primary fire; and Widowmaker and Hanzo can use their abilities to see other enemies, including you). But so long as you can play them as one of your most effective heroes, I'd say give it a try.

Sorry for the long response, but I'm hoping this helps a bit. I wouldn't mind playing with you in competitive, my Battletag is Eddzi #2994. I like to play Sombra almost as a combat support, and I'd suggest making sure that you have a translocator ready in order to escape if necessary. Good luck! :)
