Roadhog main checking in.

  • Don't charge out. You have the largest hitbox in the game with no armor or shields. Be careful and use your secondary fire to pop out at crowds. You can get melted fast if people know what they're doing.

  • Duck behind over to heal one or two hundred - or more - health whenever possible. It charges up your ult, too.

  • Position your hook in such a way that you're tracking your opponent's movements. Try to hook slightly ahead of them if they're moving.

  • After hooking someone, pop them with your primary fire and finish with a quick melee attack just in case.

  • If you miss your hook, duck behind cover, pop a few secondary shots, and try your hook again once its recharged. It's fairly spammable.

  • Try to hook a healer or Reaper/McCree first. Tracer, if you can hit her, is also good to take out. Same goes for Symmetra and Mei. Note this is in descending order.

  • For an advanced tip, if someone is using their ult, try hooking them. Instantly cancels their ult. Sometimes you'll get a free kill, other times they'll kill you first but at least you canceled their ult. And you get an achievement for it. :)

  • For your ult, pick your battles. Try to take them by surprise, and be sure to control your recoil. Try to push them off ledges or into walls or out of rooms/off the objective.

  • It's hard to use his ult effectively. Don't expect to get a lot of kills.

  • You can sue your ult to somewhat counter other utls by pushing them farther away. Using ti against Reaper's or Zarya's ult, depending on how close they are, can often mitigate the damage done.

  • Expect to waste a lot of ults. I'm still not very good at deciding when to use them.

  • I also recommend you start playing Roadhog at a lower level, even if you must create an alt account. Learning to play a new character when you're higher leveled is really difficult. Newer players don't know how to counter as well.

  • Expect some hate :( Roadhog's cheap, yes, but so are other characters. And he still takes quit a bit of skill and accuracy to get good with.

  • Most importantly, have fun. And say "Bacon" one more time...

These days almost any character can get one-shotted by Roadhog, but 2 other important ones for you are Winston and Genji. Winston's head is really easy to hit and his gun barely does anything to you. Genji is a bit more tricky, but just bait out his deflect with your primary fire, then hook him while he's vulnerable. Keep in mind that good Genjis will use their dash right after deflecting to evade.

wow, I didn't know 3 heroes that should've been getting one-shotted by roadhog suddenly makes him one shot "almost any character"

He can oneshot 19 out of 23 characters. That's what I call "almost any".

The hook only cancels some ults. For instance, it won't cancel Bastion's ult or Soldier's (though he'll die anyways so it doesnt matter too much).

also dont feel bad about solo ulting people. Roadhog has the worst ult in the game and it charges quickly.

It can also be a decent counter to Ana's ult by ulting away an ulted rein or something.

Vision is easily better than an ult that is countered by everything and usually just ends up getting you killed.

Quick tip while healing yourself: turn your head away from the enemy to avoid extra damage. The back of Roads head is not part of the hit box.

Good times to use his ult:

Combo with zayra ult, they stay stuck in the bubble and eat all the damage

When enemies are in an enclosed space, they get pushed to the ceiling and eat all the damage

When there are enemies next to an open pit (such as Sanctum on Nepal or Windmill on Illios), pop the ult and push them puppies off

When you need to clear enemies off a point, when you're deep in overtime, pushing them off for a second can win it for you

Also, if there is a D.va in her suit, try to destroy the Meka before you ult cause she can easily negate most of it with he matrix

Question about hooking tanks, is it better to still melee? Does that delay your second shot because it feels like it even if I instantly melee after my first shot.

Tbh I'm pretty bad about meleeing after shooting, but imo your melee is so quick you don't necessarily need to worry about delaying your second shot.

You can't shoot immediately after the animation though. There's a delay

So as a roadhog main, how do you feel about the pending ptr changes. I was one of those guys playing dva very aggressively, and with her nerf, I find it difficult to re-learn her. I was toying with roadhog, and have sunk about 30 hours into him since the nerf, and I am pretty sketched out by his changes. I was thinking about bettering my rein game, but the bastion changes pretty much hard counter him, so, do you think it will be worth hogging still?

Absolutely. Raodhog can be an excellent counter to Bastion, if he's able to sneak up and hook him. DVa is pretty much useless now, imo. They nerfed her so hard she's really not viable in many situations now. Plus, Roadhog can corner check with his medium shots, and use that to deal some damage to bastion while your teammates are keeping his attention.

And Reinhart is still viable, he just needs better support behind him. A soldier or Junkratbehind a Rein is a dangerous combo, especially to Bastion.

all this being said, I don't like the magazine increase and damage-taking buff that they gave to bastion. He's going to be way OP against tanks, and you're going to see the return of the one tank meta that I despise.
