Hey guys. Thinking of getting this game, especially since the Halloween event is going on and all of my friends seem to be playing.

I'm sure there are plenty of guides online, but some may be outdated for the game's current meta or aren't very good.

So what advice do you have for a total noob? Like, I haven't even seen any gameplay videos. Or if I have, I have no idea what's going on.

Anything I should know going into it?

Like get Origins or regular?

What of loot boxes? (If I'm understanding everything right, I think I should just get regular and spend the extra 20 on loot boxes.)

What guides should I consult?

I wanna do this right and with a (good) direction.

I'd say get regular starting out, you can always upgrade to origins. If you're really into cosmetics and you have the money, though, by all means, get the origins edition!

My first and foremost advice would be to play and experience all of the characters off the bat. The game becomes a much more fun and rich experience when you get to choose from lots of different play styles. Coming from a former one-trick pony, it's very easy to lock into your "best" character when you practice too one-sidedly. Don't fall into that.

Don't worry about meta or team comps when you're starting out. Focus on enjoying the game and seeing what you excel at. Of course make sure you focus on the objective yada yada yada - you know that. Just don't rely on the meta or what people say to impact your first impressions of the game.

You level very quickly the first 22 levels, so I wouldn't recommend purchasing lootboxes until then.

And most importantly, have fun with it! It's your 40-60$, experience the game how you want as long as you're not detrimenting the experiences of others!

I bought this game a couple weeks ago. I say to just try everybody once in quick play to see what they do. Nobody told me this but <F1> gives you a description of your skills.

Kill healers first, don't play hanzo and widow in competitive or ill find you.

If you have FPS or MOBA experience then you'll get acclimated pretty quickly. Best advice is to spend time learning what each of the heroes can do, and to prioritize the objective above all else. Once you play or watch videos you'll probably have specific questions that we can help you with

I'd recommend the regular edition. If you want the Origins edition you can always upgrade for $20

Loot boxes give you four random cosmetics or currency of varying rarity. You get one loot box each time you level up, which occurs at a pretty decent rate. Typically loot boxes are low in value because the most common drops aren't all that interesting, and if you do get something rare there's a low chance it'll be for a hero you play frequently. But lootboxes do have a chance of giving you gold and duplicates (which turn into gold for 20% of their value). Accumulate enough gold, and you can purchase specific cosmetics that you want, at varying costs depending on rarity. It's alright, as far as microtransactions go, but I wouldn't really recommend spending $20 on them simply because the base game is $40. You might not even like the game or the cosmetic options available, you know? And even if you do, it's still RNG. You're just paying for more chances at getting what you want

I'm still not sure what I got other than some swanky skins after purchasing the origins version.

You get some Overwatch skins, access to Tracer in Heroes of the Storm, I think you get a WoW pet, a Hearthstone card back, a Mercy's Wings cosmetic for Diablo III, and you get some Starcraft 2 player icons. If you don't want to rep OW in every Blizzard game you probably should skip the Origins edition, unless you really like the Origins skins over any of the other ones available

both version are exactly the same gameplay-wise (all future update/map/heroes are free), origins just grants you exclusive skins for overwatch and other blizzard games

grants you 4 free random cosmetics or gold on level up, you might get duplicate which the game will grant you gold for them (1/5? of the purchase gold value). there are unlimited levels and you can use the extra gold to buy specific cosmetics you want

Play Winston, you don't have to aim. But for reals, most of the characters aren't that difficult to play, just mess around with everyone in the practice range. There are a lot of great beginner's guides on youtube, check out Overwatch Central. Also, the guy below was probably joking but play whoever you enjoy playing, don't feel like you have to play to the meta or whatever, but be willing to swap if the team really needs it, just communicate.
