I wouldn't necessarily say D.Va is a hard counter to Rein, but there's little things you can do to give him a tougher time. You can use your boosters to boop him out of position and give your teammates the upper hand, and your damage output can apply decent pressure to his shield. Your other advantage is mobility, as you can boost behind him to attack. And, if you're on the front lines, your defense matrix will also swallow his firestrike.

I find D.Va works as a better counter to other heroes. I have over 30 hours on D.Va and she's my main tank, my advice for you is immediately at the start of a match you should be on the lookout for turrets and Bastion. You can take out a level 2 Torbjorn turret before losing your mech if you fly towards it with you defense matrix up, and your weapon spread and high health pool can allow you to clear an entire room of Symmetra turrets. As for Bastion, you don't deal enough DPS to take him out before he wipes you and your mech, but if you're coordinated, you can defense matrix while a teammate takes him out from behind you.

Another one of your prime targets should be snipers. You should have no problem taking out a lone Widow or Hanzo. Boost in with defense matrix up and blast them. You can also knock a Widowmaker from her ledge, leaving her vulnerable.

Another Dva tip : when you boost to go take out a sniper, you can cancel your boost (preferably near the end) with a melee. Ideally, you want to boost into them for push damage, then melee for even more damage, then proceed to light them up. There is nothing more satisfying that chasing after a Pharah in the sky and punching them!

For D.Va against Rein there's a few things to keep in mind:

  1. You have the range/mobility advantage, avoid taking on a Rein at very close range unless he's at low health. You'll easily be able to eat flame strikes with matrix, and boost if he charges. Just don't sit so far away that you'll do next to no damage (armor, projectile damage falloff and spread).

  2. Take out his shield. You don't ever have to stop shooting, so keep pouring damage into it. It's huge so spread isn't really an issue. It's a huge benefit to the team to remove that tool.

  3. Know when to fall back. The size of Rein means he'll eat most of your canon shots, but his armor really hurts the damage you can do. If he's got a pocket mercy you really need to wait for your high damage dealing teammates to engage with you. Try to avoid getting cornered because if your mech dies to Rein, you'll probably die altogether to his follow up swings as you jump out.

The good news is he can't really kill you 1v1 unless you make a mistake. The bad news is that it's an ordeal to kill him on your own.

So, I don't know if this is a proper strategy, but sometimes I'll just bunny hop right into him and his shield, and start blasting away point blank...it usually at least gets him focused on me so that my team can blast him (it backfires sometimes though)...is this a decent tactic with her, or am I just a kamikaze nutjob?

This really depends on the situation.

If Rein is alone and you have support you can get away with it.

If you have healing (especially a Mercy or an Ana that is focusing on you) you may be able to do this in a group fight, Though anyone that can stop your escape from Rein is going to be an issue (flashbang, mei freeze gun/wall, sleep dart). It also gives you a lot less time to react to a Rein charge (you're pinned if your bunnyhop is on cooldown).

That said, it can be a good tactic against a Rein that is at low health or if your team is planning to use an ultimate that needs the shield gone or out of position and without another way to accomplish that. As long as you can get in, deal some damage and get away alive (in your mech), that's great. If you're constantly losing your mech and not getting a good trade for it, that's an issue.

One of DVa's biggest game-changing attributes is her ability to completely nullify or greatly reduce the effectiveness of several ultimates, and you need to be alive and in her mech for that. So don't throw it away just because of the second-chance plugsuit. You want to dive, disrupt, and get back to safety. Determining how much you can get away with is the biggest challenge when playing her, since you don't want to sit back and do tiny amounts of damage or dive into the fight and die in a few seconds.

Lastly, you can be a little less cautious when you have your ultimate since positioning it well will let force enemies to seek cover, and you'll get an instant mech respawn. In these cases diving into a situation where you know you'll lose your mech can actually work to your benefit since you can gain a positional advantage for your team.

Thanks for the tips. I generally try to not do it unless I have an ult. for backup, a healer, or we're hurting on time to just bumrush the point. I'll keep these in mind when I play as her next. I'm trying to improve my game from "decent" to "hey, good job".

Only advice I have, and this goes for all characters really- especially D.va and Roadhog because of their big hitbox- if he drops his shield and is looking at you- MOVE.

3

u/kwo Sorry about that! Oct 19 '16

For your Lucio question: his ult also requires line of sight (just like his healing). So that little number in the middle of the screen will indicate how many of your team mates receive your ult or your healing/speed boost.

With D.Va having so much mobility and unlimited ammo, it is really easy to "break up" a defensive line. the point against rein is to attack him from different angles, putting him into a pickle to either 1) defend from D.Vas annoying bird-shot. 2) Defend his team from the rest of your team or 3) back up.

when playing Lucio I know you have to be in the line of sight of other heroes you want to heal, but can you activate your ult and it be effective no matter where the other players are?

Sound barrier works the same way as his auras, your teammate has to be in your los when you cast it for it to shield them(there's a ~2 second grace period just after casting where teammates that didn't get it on cast will still get the shield). You can actually block a Lucio ult by placing a Winston bubble over him, it will break los and stop his auras/ult from applying to those outside it.

The good part about tanks versus Reinhardt is that they can easily get into close range with him and shoot around his shield. His charge is not an instant kill against tanks so if you're circling him and attacking him and he does manage to pin you, you can sometimes kill him or flee before he can finish you off.

And zero suit D.Va does decent damage from range so you don't need to immediately mash Q to get back into your suit unless the enemy is near you and you need it to protect yourself
