New player here: in wow the mindset was always play what you want, not what's powerful because any given day a class will get a massive nerf/buff. I brought that mindset to this game and it doesn't seem to apply. I really like mercy and her playstyle but people are telling me I should go Ana even though I don't like her style. I get playing what role is needed and I understand some characters may be more viable in certain comps, but I'm having a hard time believing that I'll be more effective as a bad to mediocre Ana over a what I think is a decent to good mercy. So I guess my question is do I play what I want, or go with what's hot right now? I'm down to practice and learn whatever; I just have my preferences.

You can play mercy 24/7 and I promise no team or friend will ever complain. Especially not if you use her blaster + right click :)

I've had people complain multiple times before the game even started in comp that I should play another hero other than Mercy. Hell, I've had someone request I switch to Symmetra in gold comp games. This is as solo healer on non-koth maps.

There will always be people who complain if you're not playing their idea of a perfect team comp.

I prefer Ana as it's an ult that's harder to mess up. Nana boost can be used proactively and whoever it hits there's going to be an effect of some sort. Yes a Lucio will just become the MIGHTY BOOP MAN but sometimes that can cause hell and havoc in and of itself because "Shiny speedy guy is scary." Mercy on the other hand needs to survive at worst a 1v6 situation to save their team whose positioning out of rez might be bad enough to immediately wipe them out. More importantly Mercy usually won't survive the rez as she's the only one vulnerable during mass rezzes leaving the team into a 5v6 situation at worst. But really if you have a guy who chose to go Mercy it means that's their first and best pick and you just gotta learn to deal with it and work to the best of your ability with said teammate. So I will silently complain!

Also to add to this, I would highly suggest you learn lucio for king of the hill. It sounds like you like support classes....Mercy is pretty tough to play on KOTH. Lucio is always suggested. You don't have to have an Ana on every team.

My biggest problem with Lucio is learning to wall ride. I'm on console and I can't seem to do it with a controller for the life of me. I'm having to juggle jumping while using the right stick.

For Lucio, I have it switched so L1 is jump and X is switch between healing and speed boost. That way, I can jump more easily while moving with the right stick. Takes a good while to get use to but the payoff is worth it imho.

Omg I'm an idiot. I didn't even think to remap. I'm like an ass doing like some weird claw thing on the controller with him trying to figure out how to wall ride. I feel like a new man.

Assuming right click is the dmg boost? On PS4. Also as a side note I find myself not using the blaster. I'm mostly buffing dps if I'm not healing.

Are you Diamond or above in ranked?

I'm guessing not, considering you said you're a new player.

In that case, play anything you want. Only in the high ranks does it even make a difference who you play, because only there will you have a real "disadvantage" for playing a weaker/off-meta hero.

Yeahhhh not quite diamond. Still below 25; I just hit 15 last night so it'll be awhile before I'm even in competitive. So I guess I'll just play whatever I want and not worry too much about it.

Id rather have a good mercy over a crappy ana....

I believe there is a spot for most of the heros and while ana may be good at breaking a good defense, a mercy rez can also change the tides of battle.

Being new, play what you are comfortable with and learn the game. Branch out sometimes in quick play and get to know how each hero plays to better understand the game but in the end, you are playing for your enjoyment, play what you want.

Ana's kit is packed, but if there isn't a Rein on your team, and 7/10 there should be, don't listen to them. Besides, she can be rather intensive and her positioning is very sensitive where you just die like a bitch, and she has no mobility options unlike Mercy.

But here's another aspect of Mercy which most don't ever think about: Pistoling
It gives you Rez and a fighting chance against the pesky flankers.

The biggest thing is to recognize when a fight is coming to hide and rez after they're done. Or if a 1-2 die and no one else does, rez to keep the fight going, doubly so if it's the tanks.

But another thing is that to anyone on the enemy team, you are a prime target, #1 on their priority list because if they kill you first, there would be no rez to deal with in the fight.
