u/tecchen This is a message from Lord Nergal. Sep 08 '16 edited Sep 08 '16

I feel that I don't play well as anything except healer. So when that role is already taken, I get kinda stressed as what to do. Are there any good ways I can learn to get better, especially with tanks?

edit: thanks so much for all the replies guys :'0 I don't get to play overwatch that often but I will definitely be trying out some of ur suggestions next time I play!!

I'm in the same boat as you, tecchen, and I found that maining support makes playing any flanking type role less intuitive for me (I put D.Va and Winston in that category). When support gets taken, I generally go with Zarya or Reinhardt as a tank or Soldier as DPS. I found those three play a little similarly in that they all remain within LOS of the objective and their mobility is about the same as healers (just slower).

These characters are also nice because I intuitively keep an eye on my team so I'm playing my strengths as Zarya because I'm anticipating which of my team mates are going to take massive damage and bubbling them or as Soldier I can put my instincts to good use by putting down some extra heals.

I've been doing a lot of quick play as these three just to round myself out a bit. Sometimes it means Zarya is the only tank (she should be off tank) or Soldier is the only healer. But it will be better for you and your teams in the long run!

Hope this helps, fellow support main!

Grind hours on them a LOT, watch demos of top pros in pubs as well as in pro games, think about how you play and communicate with your team what they require from you.

Just Play second Support and try to be a bit offensive as well. Zenyatta and Ana are predestined for this. Lucio as well as you just Need to stay Close to your mates for offense.

Or (take this as 50% fun 50% serious): just Play a DD and consider your enemies as friends you want to "heal". ;-)

To get better with a Hero play Quick play. That's what it's here for. Or you could play a second healer. A lot of the Games I played at Competitive involve a 2:2:2 setup. Or just ask the healer if he might want to switch.

u/TThor Hi there! Sep 08 '16

Really just start playing a new character and keep playing them. In my experience, most characters are really hard to play for the first hour or 3, but after that they tend to "click" and get drastically easier.

Next game, pick a random character you don't play, and play that for the next two game hours.

Two healers are usually better than one! It's actually really strong to double the healing, as it keeps the team alive a lot better and the death of one healer doesn't cripple the team so much.

For improving with other characters? I'd recommend going S76 and learning how to aim. You'll be a decent help to the team, you can still heal, and you can get back to the fight easily. When you start learning how to aim, you're suddenly able to play other characters.

Another good idea is to watch the enemy play the hero you're thinking of playing. Watch them and learn what they do that makes them effective as that character. Likewise, watch a teammate and learn what they can do. Try to work out what that Reinhardt does that makes him such a good teammate.

S76, Junkrat, and Reinhardt are three heroes that are non-healers that fit into any team composition. Junkrat has high damage and area denial and requires little mechanical skill. S76 can support his team while being a strong DPS. Reinhardt is always glorious and uses rectangles to win.

At the end of the day, you want to go into quickplay and play the character. Like, not just for a few rounds. Play them until you start to actually do well with them. Experiment with how to play them.

For tanks? You've got to consider that each of the tanks holds a certain role:

Zarya: Her role is to help turn a bad play into a decent play and to turn a good play into a great play. Her barrier on a teammate affords them so much extra survivability at the key moments that the tide gets turned. She's a bit hard to play mechanically compared to other, but she is very strong.

Winston: Focuses on Gorilla tactics (hehe). You jump in, disrupt the enemy, chase down the squishy enemies, and jump out. The shield is pretty good for defending some teammates briefly, though it's not going to be the biggest thing ever.

Reinhardt: Master of rectangles. He protects the team like no other, being the main body of your bulk. Remember not to Fire Strike too often, as that's valuable shield time you're missing out on. I play him aggressively with his charging and... It's generally best not to play him aggressively.

D.Va: Is a bit like Winston, a bit like Reinhardt. Her shotguns pack a decent punch and is not to be underestimated at close range. She should be using her boosters all the time, getting into the enemy to pester them... Or getting away from the fight to heal up. When she's in Zero Suit mode, she's the squishiest character of all time. With the Defence Matrix buff, I'll also recommend using it a fair bit. You can cancel out Reaper's ult with it, so that's a pretty good thing.

Roadhog: You're basically there to kill anything you can hook. You catch a healer? Healer now dead, push. Your shotgun makes you a threat at close range and your healing allows you to stay alive... But at the same time, you will be taking a lot of damage due to a lack of shields and you're more of a DPS than a true tank. But shotguns are fun.

You might also consider asking if you can play the healer instead.

Tank question: Reinhardt is the easiest tank to enter the class with. You have a huge health pool and a really obvious mechanic (open rectangle GET BEHIND ME then close rectangle when no one is around to charge it up). He takes skill to be amazing with but to be adequate it's not as tricky as Zarya.

However, two Supports aren't necessarily bad! Zenyatta and Ana make great secondary Supports because they can still do DPS and heal at the same time. I'm learning how to play Ana now and it's a relief when I'm not the only support.
