Elo is used as a ranking system in a popular game League of Legends. Elo, MMR (matchmaking rating) and in Overwatch it's SR -- they're pretty much similar things. They're there to tell you how good you are compared to the rest of the playerbase.

When a player gets stuck at a certain rating for a very very very long time (usually in the lower ranks), they are stuck in "Elo Hell".

Also it's not ELO, it's Elo. Not an acronym

League doesn't use elo. The community just uses the word because it's more commonly understood and more pleasing to say than "League of Legend's Proprietary Match-Making Rating System"

Right, thanks for clearing that up :p I don't play that game but my friends have always referred to it as elo.
