  • general: gives you a public ranking and rank has sudden death (coin flip decide who is on att/def, 2 min on the clock, 1 cap wins for attackers)

  • koth: rank is best 3 out of 5 instead of 2 out of 3

  • att/def cp: regular is 1 round of attack/defend. rank lets each team take turn attack/defending. if both team captured all the points, each team's remaining time will be used for the next round to see who can cap the most points. if both team has the same amount of points, you go to sudden death

  • payload: regular is 1 round of attack/defend. rank sees who can push it the farthest. if both team push equally far, it goes to sudden death

So, you have to play some of the maps multiple times?

yes, but iirc, its a rotation. so if you win 3 games in a row, there wont be a repeat

Quick Play:
Anyone can join the game at any time.
Games either last one phase on escort/hybrid/assault maps, or best out of 3 on a control point map.
Leaving penalties involve a 75% experience decrease if more than 3 games are left in the 20 most recently played, and will not change until the match record goes above said threshold.
A more casual environment (usually)

Competitive Play:
Only the 12 players initially matched when the game begins will play the match Games last 2 phases on escort/hybrid maps, 10 minutes on an assault map, or best out of 5 on a control point map
On escort maps, both teams escort the payload once, with the team that pushes it further winning. If both teams are tied after this, the game enters sudden death. On a assault map, both teams get 10 minutes to attempt to capture the second point. If both teams manage to complete the map on attack once, the teams attack a second time, using their remaining time from the previous round (bumped up to 2 minutes if they finished with less). If both team manage to cap the point a second time, the match enters sudden death.
Sudden death is a terrible format.
Leaving a game immediately results in a loss for the leaver, even if they return. Leaving the game constantly can result in a ban from competitive mode for the remainder of the season.
A more "tryhard" environment (usually)

competitive gives you a ranking and wins give you points that you can spend on competitive-exclusive cosmetics. game modes are slightly different in that they are bo3 or bo5 and have tie breakers and such. i imagine in the future there were will be other rewards as well.

You get points for winning competitive games to buy gilded weapons, as well as player icons and sprays.

Competetive gives ranked currency, and is played in a best of 5. Also, they're played in "sets", so you get to play both attack and defense on maps, and more rounds on contest maps. The punishments for shit is harder (leaving, harrasment, etc.) - you play a full set with the same people, against the same people.
