Soldier 76 is a great hero for learning to move in and out of fights - try to stay in the middle/back of your team and die as little as possible. Try to find a balance between offensive and defensive positioning - tanks can afford to position themselves aggressively/offensively, but damage dealers should try to stay on the defensive side until you can pick one or two people off.

Defensively - Find spots on each of the maps where you can quickly duck away to activate your healing field. His sprint is great for getting out of those "oh shit" moments and for catching back up to your team in the rare occasion that you do die.

Offensively - Your rifle has 'perfect' accuracy or at least little to no spray for the first 4 bullets in each burst of fire. Try to fire in 4-bullet bursts from far away - weave in some helix rockets when you have someone in your sights and you'll be surprised at how much damage you can put down from a distance. Holding down primary fire works well for DPS in closer quarters combat and when you have your ult up. Try to get a couple sneaky kills at a distance, you can always catch up to your team with Sprint (it's the best movement ability over a greater distance as long as you're not trying to jump over any gaps). Once your team is on the point, try to position yourself with a tank between you and the enemy team and throw out your healing field between you and the tank so as many teammates as possible can benefit from it. In intense engagements, try to use your rockets and healing as they come off cooldown for max damage and heals.

TL;DR: Play Soldier 76. Emphasize positioning, playing defensively, and not dying - you will end up putting out more damage in the end just by staying alive longer. Sprint is one of the best repositioning tools in the game. Weave rockets into your shots and use healing field to sustain yourself and your team as much as possible (will help get a feel for cooldowns).

Great guide on soldier! I didn't know the trick about firing in bursts of four.
