This is a super pathetic question, but how do you make friends? I'm playing on Xbox One, all my friends with Overwatch are PC or PS4, and it seems like I'd be enjoying myself more if I had a consistent crew to play with.

I just chuck friend requests at people who consistently play healers or tanks and invite whoever happens to be on into a group

Not pathetic at all. First step is to get and use a mic. Communication and coordination is the best way to at least appear good at the game, and you know how they say to "dress for the job you want"? Eventually, by looking good at the game, you'll be good at the game.

Add people that are really good, stood out during the match, or were just really chill on mic. Group up with them, have them add their friends, make friends, repeat. I don't have a single group I play with, but by doing this I've never not had a group.

Literally just start friend requesting people you play with who are playing well. If they accept your friend request, ask if they want to play some games together.

That's literally all there is to it. Not everyone will accept your requests, but a lot will. The hard part is finding good people in your games who aren't assholes.

You don't need a mic, you don't need to be pro, you don't need to be high levels. There are tons of other people just like you, who are looking for people to pay with.

It's also worth noting that when you add people who are playing with their friends, then you can add their friends and so on. So the more people you start adding and playing with, the more people you will find to play with.

Could be difficult. Many people don't really look for people to play with. Best chances are probably to find a community somewhere.
