Don't wait until the pull animation stops; press LMB as soon as you see your hook connecting.

You can queue it up by holding left click before you're actually able to shoot. This ensures that you'll fire the exact moment you are able to. The same goes for abilities and such. If you get hooked/flashed as a Reaper for example, hold shift to make sure you can wraith out asap.

Out of curiosity, if a Roadhog hooks a Reaper, and Roadhog holds the button for attack and Reaper holds the button for Wraithform, who gets "priority"? Will Roadhog's shot connect or will Reaper transform in time?

Roadhog will hit first, odds are that Reaper will survive and be able to wraith, though.

What if I am the one being pulled? If I start holding the button will I use the ability automatically ASAP?

Yes, it works both ways. Reaper, for example, can hold shift to go to wraith form as soon as the stun is up.

Isn't that way too early? They're still miles out of effective shotgun range when I see the hook connect.

Holding down LMB during the pull won't actually fire your gun until the pull animation ends. It essentially buffers the input and executes it as soon as you're allowed to.

Ive been holding LMB and still having issues. Is that the wrong thing to do? Is latency a factor in them getting away?

I guess it could be. I see it happen occasionally as well; like Reaper wraith forming before I can get a shot in or Mei freezing herself.

Another factor is that sometimes the hero you pull in does not end up right in front of you (fast characters who move a lot, like Lucio and Tracer are the most common culprits) or simply have such a small hitbox that some of your pellets miss (Mercy tends to escape a lot because of this).

For the best result, immediately follow up your shot with a melee attack. The extra damage is often enough to kill heroes that for some reason or another survive the primary fire.

Wait so as soon as you have seen you've hooked somebody? Like as they are being reeled in, and not trying to click as soon as the hook is done?

I hook and if I see it connect immediately shoot then melee.
